A solid all-around effort propelled the LeTourneau University women's basketball team to a 67-61 win over host Hendrix College to begin the 2014-15 season on Friday. First-time starter sophomore
Bria Goodman led the YellowJackets with a career-best 14 points and four assists to lead the YellowJackets. It is the fourth-consecutive win to begin the season for LeTourneau and first career win for head coach
Leslie Reinecker.
"This was a great win for our team to start off our season," said an excited Reinecker. "We really battled tonight with a high-scoring Hendrix team and controlled the game down the stretch."
Goodman was joined in double digits by senior
Rebecca Stewart, who came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight rebounds. Also providing a spark off the bench was junior newcomer
Abril Wright, who scored six-straight points to start the second half for LETU and pull down a team-high nine rebounds. Plus, sophomore
Meagan Peters added five points and four rebounds as the LETU frontline outscored Hendrix, 40-18 in the win.
"We got contributions from a lot of people.
Meagan Peters and
Abril Wright really stepped up for us tonight, but we were able to count on several others to get the win," said Reinecker. "I am very proud of our effort and am very excited about the progress the team is making."
Hendrix (1-2) was led by the tandem of Anna King and Estrella Flores. King had a double double with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, plus Flores added 16 points.
In the second half, LETU initiated a full-court press that challenged the host Warriors. Midway through the second half, the YellowJackets' sophomore
Marialle Boles - in her first collegiate start - tied the contest at 42 with 10:29 remaining. After the Boles bucket, a layup by sophomore
Ashley Reed sparked five unanswered points for the YellowJackets, who saw the Warriors claw to as close as two. LETU outscored the Warriors by a 27-19 margin for the last 10:29 of the game.
It will be a quick turnaround for LeTourneau as they will travel to face Rhodes College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Memphis. Last year, the Lynx advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and defeated the YellowJackets, 55-38 in Solheim Arena on November 23.
