LETU Men's Soccer Loses to UT Dallas, 2-1

Senior goalkeeper Joe Myers (pictured) scooped up 15 saves but it was a deflection off a teammate and a conversion on a penalty kick that led the visiting UT Dallas men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference win over LeTourneau University on Friday in Longview.

The Comets (4-2-2), who are ranked No. 8 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's Soccer West Regional ranking, had 24 shots in the contest, 17 of which were on goal.

The YellowJackets (2-5) were led by the performance by Myers between the posts. The 15 saves by Myers were a career-high and the second most by a LETU goalkeeper in 2014. Earlier in the season, Miguel Cabrera had 16 saves against Texas Lutheran on Sept. 6.

With the game scoreless in the 29th minute, sophomore Kevin Whatley for UT-Dallas put the visitors ahead when he scored on a deflection off the LETU defender from six yards out for the early 1-0 lead.

LeTourneau nearly equalizes in the 71st minute but an offsides call negated a goal. Two minutes later, UTD extended its lead to 2-0 when senior Dalton McFarling scored on a penalty kick which proved to be the game-winning goal.

Trailing 2-0, the YellowJackets continued to put pressure on the visitors. In the 79th minute, sophomore Hunter Swift scored on a volley off the bounce after a cross by junior Mario Lopez to cut the deficit to 2-1.  For Swift, it was his fourth goal of the season to take over team-high honors.

The two teams will have a rematch on Thursday, Oct. 2 in Richardson at 7 p.m.
