Volleyball: All-Around Team Play Leads LeTourneau to 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-11 win over Sul Ross State

On the strength of 45 kills from seven-different players, the LeTourneau University volleyball team picked up a 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-11 win over host Sul Ross State on Friday in Alpine.

The YellowJackets (6-10, 2-3 ASC) were led by the tandem of sophomore Elyse Wright and junior Kayla Ronda, who had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman Savanna Stutts added eight kills to the win. The setter tandem of freshman Nicole Mosley and sophomore Alyssa Eden added 23 and 17 assists, respectively.

"It wasn't the start that we were hoping for but what counts is that the team got better as the match went on and finished strong. We did a really good job of spreading the ball around tonight," said LETU head coach Scott Peluso. "Nicole (Mosley) and Alyssa (Eden) did a great job with our set distribution and getting all of our hitters involved. We have really been pushing that in practice so it's nice to see it manifest in the game. That would not be possible if our passing was not on and Kayla (Ronda), Dolores (Kroese) and Mackenzie (Davies) did a great job with our serve receive." Kroese led LETU with 15 digs, followed by 12 from Davies and Mosley added nine.

The Lobos (5-10, 0-6 ASC) had defeated LeTourneau on September 5 was held to a -.007 hitting percentage in the defeat. Raeghan Shaw had a team-high nine kills and shared in team-high honors with two service aces.

After being held to a .071 hitting percentage in the first set, LETU came alive in the next three sets. In the second set, the YellowJackets hit at a .200 clip; followed by a .206 clip in the third set before closing out the match with a .161 hitting percentage in the fourth and final set. The LETU frontline had seven total team locks including two block solos and two block assists from Wright.

"It was truly a team effort and I was impressed with their ability to recover from a sloppy first set and get better with each set after that one," said Peluso.

The next match for LeTourneau is a contest at the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday, September 30 at 7 p.m. in Richardson.
