An 8-2 spurt after the second tie of the game put host No. 12 Texas-Tyler ahead 19-11 with 13:41 to play in the opening half and for the rest of the game en route to an 85-55 win over the LeTourneau University women's basketball team on Thursday night.
The YellowJackets (4-14, 2-11 ASC) shot a season-best 55.6% (15-for-27) in the opening 20 minutes but were victim to 11 turnovers. LeTourneau closed out the game, shooting 39.3% in the loss.
Senior
Rebecca Stewart (pictured) had her 13th game in double digits – fifth in a row – with 16 points and sophomore
Ashley Reed added 10 points – seven in the first half for LETU in the loss.
The Patriots (18-1, 13-1 ASC) were led by the seventh double double of the season by Brittany King, who had a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
A trio of others - Michelle Obach (18 points), Makenzi May (16 points) and Teylor Seals (13 points) – joined King in double digits. Like LeTourneau, UT Tyler built a 55-35 halftime lead on the strength of 66.7% (20-for-30) shooting from the field.
LeTourneau kept the deficit to single digits until a 3 pointer by May with 9:16 left in the first half extended the margin to double digits for the rest of the contest. The YellowJackets rallied to cut the deficit to as little as 14, twice, in the second half.
The YellowJackets will next travel on the road to face Ozarks on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Clarksville, Arkansas at 1 p.m. Earlier this year, LeTourneau dropped a 75-63 decision to the Eagles on Dec. 19 in Longview.
