LeTourneau Women's Basketball Surges Past Ozarks, 86-66

After the two teams each exchanged a pair of baskets, LeTourneau University sophomore Ashley Reed hit a 3 pointer that propelled visiting LeTourneau women's basketball with an 86-66 win over host Ozarks on Saturday in Clarksville, Arkansas.

The YellowJackets (5-14, 3-11 ASC) seized the lead on the 3 pointer by Reed and for the rest of the contest. LeTourneau landed four players in double digits in the win and a tenacious defense held Ozarks to 35.3% shooting in the win. LETU junior Ashley Stephens (pictured) had her fourth double double of the season with a season-high 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the YellowJackets. Senior Rebecca Stewart nearly had a double double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Plus, reserves sophomores Ashley Crockett (13 points) and Julia Land (12 points) contributed to a bench that outscored Ozarks, 36-14. The 86 points put up by the YellowJackets is the most in a road game for LeTourneau since the 100-point effort against Jarvis Christian on November 18, 2008.

"This was a great team win," said an excited LETU head coach Leslie Reinecker. "We got contributions from everyone and played with high intensity. We hvae really focused on consistency and I thought we did a good job of maintaining our composure and controlling the game."

The Eagles (10-10, 6-9 ASC) – who had won the earlier meeting, 75-63 in Longview on December – were able to have three score in double digits. Ashley Hipps led Ozarks with a game-high 18 points, Bryanna Moltz and Madison Sherrer scored 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Stewart, Stephens and Crockett combined for 28 of the 47 points as the trio nearly outscored Ozarks in the first half. The three led LETU, who built a 47-30 halftime lead as they shot 11-for-19 from the field for the YellowJackets. LeTourneau shot 52.9% in the first 20 minutes as it was the fifth time for the season and second-consecutive game that the YellowJackets had shot 50% or better in the first half. The 32% (8-for-25) by Ozarks was the third lowest effort by an LETU opponent in the first half for the season. Also, in the half, 22 of the 47 points came in the paint and 13 of them were second-chance efforts.

LeTourneau kept the lead at double digits for most of the contest until Ozarks cut the deficit to nine, 67-58, with 6:51 to play. The YellowJackets responded with nine of the next 10 points during nearly a five-minute stretch to end the comeback effort by the Eagles. For LETU, in the second half, Stephens had nine points and nine rebounds and Land scored 10 of her 12 points to spark the YellowJackets.

The YellowJackets will return to Longview for its next four games, beginning with a contest against Concordia on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. for Hawaiian Night at Solheim Arena.
