LETU Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Belhaven, 2-1

Belhaven University forward Cillian Thompson scored in the 102nd minute to spoil a valiant effort by the LeTourneau University men's soccer team in a 2-1 double overtime loss on Saturday afternoon in Longview.

The YellowJackets (3-8-1) equalized in the 55th minute when senior Jay Huemoeller and sophomore Aaron Hastings capitalized on an out of place goalkeeper for the Blazers. In a scramble, after a LETU corner kick, Hastings touched it to Huemoeller for a quick shot past the keeper to tie the game at 1. LETU junior goalkeeper Miguel Cabrera had nine saves in the loss.

The Blazers (8-3-1) outshot the YellowJackets by a 15-5 margin in the win. The visitors ended a scoreless contest in the 33rd minute when John Ledbetter scored on a scramble in front of the LETU goal for an early 1-0 lead.

After Huemoeller tied the game in the 55th minute, the Belhaven had a pair of opportunities sail wide in regulation to send the match into overtime. Then, in the first extra session, the LETU defense blocked a shot in the 92nd minute and Cabrera made a save on a rebound attempt to send it to a second overtime.

With the game tied, in the second overtime, Thompson scored the game winner in the 102nd minute on a shot past Cabrera on the right side of the box for the 2-1 win.

Next, LeTourneau will return to the road to face Howard Payne, who they played on Sept. 18 in a non-conference game that saw HPU win 3-2 in double overtime.
