Epitomizing the three seniors who were recognized in pre-game festivities, the LETU men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie with University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The two teams played the contest in a constant downpour with each team having opportunities throughout the 110 minutes. LeTourneau was out shot by a 28-9 margin but junior goalkeeper
Miguel Cabrera kept a clean slate with a season-high 14 saves in the shutout. The tie puts LeTourneau at 4-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
UMHB (6-4-3, 3-2-2) had a balanced attack for the 28 shots including a five-shot effort by McKenna Cook in the tie. Goalkeeper Javier Zaragoza had five saves to record the shutout. The Cru also had a 17-1 advantage on corner kicks with several opportunities negated by a collapsing LETU defense and the rainy conditions. Organizing the defense, much like has done throughout his career was senior
Jay Huemoeller. Fellow seniors
Xavier Scarlett and
Mario Lopez set up opportunities throughout the contest as well as made significant contributions to a tightly-packed LETU defense in the tie.
An opportunity for the game-winning goal for LETU junior
Hunter Swift in closing seconds of the first overtime gave the YellowJackets its best opportunity in the extra session for the win. UMHB had chances in the extra session, five of which were saved by Cabrera in the tie.
Seniors
Jay Huemoeller,
Mario Lopez and
Xavier Scarlett were recognized in a pre-game ceremony with their teammates and their families.
Next, LETU will close out the regular season with a trip to Abilene to face McMurry (Fri., Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.) and Hardin-Simmons (Sat., Oct. 31 at 3 p.m.)
