With four players in double figures including the second-straight double double by senior
Giovanny Thompson (pictured), the LeTourneau University men's basketball team posted a 77-70 win over host Millsaps College on Tuesday night.
The YellowJackets (1-1) were led by the 21-point effort from sophomore
Alec Colhoff, who for the second-straight game hit five 3-pointers. Thompson registered his second double double with a 10-point, 13-rebound effort; plus junior
Jeff Martin and senior
Zakarius Wells adding 14 and 11, respectively. Senior
CJ Edwards made the most of his first career start with a nine point, four assist and two steal effort in 24 minutes of action.
Â
The Majors (0-2) also had four in double digits including a pair of 11-point scorers, Alex Gerchow and Marc Robertson. Plus, Jacob Spence and Trent Markwith each had 10 in the loss for the Majors.
Â
Facing a one-point deficit, 24-23, LeTourneau freshman
Seth Mattson knocked down a 3 pointer that put the YellowJackets ahead 26-23 with 2:21 left to play in the opening half. The game was tied two more times until another LETU freshman
Greg Schexnayder made a layup to send the visitors into the halftime break with a two-point lead, 30-28. Colhoff started the second half with a 3 pointer and the YellowJackets remained in front for the rest of the contest. Millsaps managed to cut the deficit to as little as five in the final 20 minutes.
Â
It was a big second half for the YellowJackets in the win. In the second half, LETU shot 53.8% from the field – its highest effort in the second 20 minutes since a 56.3% clip against Schreiner in a 76-74 win on Dec. 31, 2014. Colhoff had 18 of his 21, plus Martin had 12 of his 14 for LETU.
Â
The YellowJackets will come home to host Texas College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Solheim Arena. Fans are encouraged to bring a canned good as LETU is collecting canned goods for the East Texas Food Bank. Plus, Madison Fontaine, a freshman at nearby White Oak High School, who is a M.A. Dance National Twirl Champion for the last four years will be performing at halftime.Â
