Men's Basketball: Texas College Snags Win Away from LeTourneau in Overtime, 83-81

Roy Shelton for Texas College hit two free throws with four seconds left in overtime to lead the visiting Steers to an 83-81 win over LeTourneau University on Saturday. The tightly contested game saw the score tied 17 times and lead change hands on 15 occasions with both teams having four in double figures.

To reach overtime, LeTourneau junior Jeff Martin (pictured) made a lay-up with 0.6 left in regulation to tie the game at 68. Martin finished the game with a team-high 17 points and senior Giovanny Thompson had his third-straight double double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, plus sophomore Alec Colhoff and senior C.J. Edwards added 16 and 10 points, respectively. The loss drops LETU to 1-2 on the season.
 
The Steers (2-2) were led by a game-high 24 point effort from Nathaniel Francis. He was joined in double digits by Shelton (17 points), Darrelle Flowers (12 points) and Dezmond Biggurs (11 points).
 
Texas College erased a 36-33 LETU halftime lead with a 10-2 run to take a 43-38 lead with 15:27 to play. TC remained in front until a 5-0 spurt by the YellowJackets put the home team back in front, 51-48 with 7:48 to go in regulation. The contest remained close for the rest of regulation. LeTourneau erased a five-point deficit with 1:15 to play when Colhoff hit a layup with 1:15 to play for a 63-62 lead in favor of the YellowJackets. On the ensuing possession, Flowers hit a 3 pointer with the shot clock winding down that put the visitors back in front, 65-63 with :55 to go.
 
Next, the Steers added to its lead with a pair of free throws with :24 to play, but with :11 to go, Martin hit a 3 pointer to cut the deficit to 67-66. Then, the YellowJackets fouled Yuri Howard, who made one of two free throws to set up the game-tying layup by Martin.
 
In the extra session, the two teams went back and forth with the lead changing hands on four occasions and the score tied on five occasions. After the 16th tie of the game, Shelton made a pair of free throws to start a 6-0 spurt that put the visitors ahead, 81-76. The YellowJackets rallied to tie it at 81 on a 3-pointer by Edwards and a pair of free throws by Thompson.
 
With four seconds left in overtime, Shelton was fouled and made a pair of free throws which proved to be the difference. A last-second 3 pointer by Martin came up short to end the contest.

The three-straight double double performances by Thompson are the first by a LETU player since Justin Jones had three in a row – Jan. 18 vs. Howard Payne; Jan. 23 vs. Louisiana College and Jan. 25 vs. Mississippi College.
 
The YellowJackets will next take part in the Texas Lutheran Thanksgiving Classic in Seguin. LETU will face host TLU on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. and Schreiner on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. in Seguin.
