LETU Women's Basketball Loses to Millsaps, 71-65

A second-straight double figures effort by junior Crystal Jones and a 15-point effort from junior Ashley Reed (pictured) was not enough as the LeTourneau University women's basketball team dropped a 71-65 decision to host Millsaps College on Tuesday night.

Millsaps (2-0) took their first lead since the first quarter when Kim Klunk hit her only 3-pointer of the contest with :31 left in the third quarter that put Millsaps ahead 49-47. The Majors built the lead to as much as 10, 57-47 with 7:02 to play until Reed and the YellowJackets regained the lead with a 16-5 spurt for a 63-62 lead as the junior from Cedar Park hit her fifth 3 pointer of the game with 1:58 to play.
 
Millsaps came out of a :30 timeout and a Braxton Thomas layup put the home team ahead for the rest of the contest. The Majors had four in double figures including Thomas, who had 15 points. She was joined by Miah Brooks, who added 14 points, Katie Connor and Kasi Matthews each scored 13 in the win.
 
LeTourneau (1-1) picked up a game-high 19 points from Jones and Reed accounted for 15 to lead LeTourneau in the loss. 15 of the 19 for Jones came in the first quarter when she was 6-of-11 from the field for LeTourneau. Senior Ashley Stephens had seven rebounds to lead LETU, plus Jones and junior Alexandria Burroughs each had six. Reed also handed out four assists in the defeat.
 
Next on the schedule for LETU is a matchup with NCAA Division II member, Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Commerce. The assistant coach for the Lions will be a familiar face – Markeith Brown, who served as an assistant coach at LETU for the last six seasons.
