A 37-point effort by Michelle Obach propelled visiting No. 9 UT Tyler with a 99-83 win over the LeTourneau University women's basketball team on Thursday to snap a five-game winning streak for the host YellowJackets.
LeTourneau (6-4, 3-1) was led by a 33-point effort by junior
Crystal Jones. It is the second 30-point game for the Fort Worth native on the season. She becomes the first player since Sara Vestfals in 2000-01 to have two 30-point games in the same season. Senior
Ashley Stephens nearly had a double double with nine points and 11 rebounds, plus junior
LaTanya Drakes came off the bench to score 14 points in the defeat.
UT Tyler (8-0, 4-0) shot 59% (36-for-61) from the field – its highest effort since a 61.4% clip against Hardin Simmons (Jan. 24, 2015) – in the win. Obach led three Patriots in double figures, including D'Onna Matthews (17 points) and Re'Elle Miller (15 points). UT Tyler hit ten 3-pointers, including five by Obach in the win. It is the fifth time in eight games that the Patriots have hit double digit 3-pointers on the season. Not only was UT Tyler strong from the outside, they were strong from the inside with 50 of its 99 points coming in the paint.
Jones and Obach started their respective scoring barrage in the opening quarter. Jones accounted for 13 of the 24 points for the YellowJackets, who led 24-21 after the first period. Obach was responsible for 10 of the 21 for the Patriots.
The Patriots seized control of the game when they shot 75% (12-for-16) in the second period as they outscored the YellowJackets, 33-21 en route to a 54-45 lead at the halftime break. To start the period, UT Tyler went on a 12-2 run to build a 33-26 lead and an advantage that they would never relinquish. LeTourneau managed to cut the deficit to as little as four, 61-57, with 5:15 to go in the third period before UTT went on a 12-4 run to end the period. In the final period, LeTourneau scored the first five points to get within seven, 73-66, but the YellowJackets would be unable to get any closer.
LeTourneau will be idle for the Christmas Break before returning to action at the UT Tyler Christmas Classic on Dec. 29 against Trinity University at noon and on Dec. 30 against Texas Lutheran at noon.
