Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

LETU Women's Basketball Loses in Overtime to Hardin-Simmons, 68-62

Hardin-Simmons University women's basketball scored the last five points in overtime to come away with a 68-62 win to spoil Senior Day for the LeTourneau University women's basketball team.

LeTourneau (7-16, 5-13 ASC) had three in double digits including senior Rebecca Stewart, who was recognized following the game, with a team-high 18 points. Sophomore Bria Goodman and junior Ashley Stephens added 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Hardin-Simmons (12-11, 10-8 ASC) had four in double figures, including Taylor Klement, who a double double (16 points and 11 rebounds). Sara Vargas (15 points), Joanna Daniel (13 points) and Rachel Holik (10 points) were also in double figures.

It was a tightly contested game that saw the lead change hands five teams and the score tied 11 more times. The Cowgirls won the rebounding battle by a 44-39 margin, but LETU grabbed four more offensive rebounds.

"I am proud of the way our team battled throughout this game," said LETU head coach Leslie Reinecker. "No matter what happened the players just kept working. We just came up a little short at the end. Now, we have to focus on our next 2 games on the road."

LETU found itself behind as much as seven on a pair of occasions in the second half until they rallied to send the game to overtime in the loss. Facing a three-point deficit with 1:30 to play in regulation, a free throw by sophomore Bria Goodman and a lay-up by sophomore Ashley Reed with :23 tied the game for the eighth time. After forcing an HSU turnover, LETU took a two-point lead when Goodman made two free throws with :16 to play.

HSU answered with a lay-up with nine seconds to play. Without a timeout and less than a second to play, Reed was fouled after an offensive rebound. The Cedar Hill native went to the free-throw line and needed to make just one of two free throws for the victory. Both attempts rimmed out and the game went into overtime.

Playing in their fourth overtime game of the season, LETU took a pair of early two-point leads in the extra session before HSU scored four-straight points with 1:54 left to take a 63-59 lead. The Cowgirls saw Letourneau cut the deficit to one on a three-point play by Goodman with 1:08 to go. HSU sealed the win, making five of its final six free throws.

Between games, LeTourneau recognized its two seniors – Rebecca Stewart and Kalyn Shorter – who have been significant contributors to the program.

Next on the schedule is a trip to Sul Ross State (Thur., Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m.) and Howard Payne (Sat., Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.). LETU defeated Sul Ross State on January 17, 90-65 and dropped a 103-99 overtime decision to HPU on Jan. 15.
