LETU Baseball Completes Series Sweep of ETBU with 4-0 Win

The LeTourneau University baseball team completed its second-straight series sweep of local rival, East Texas Baptist with a 4-0 win on Tuesday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.

The YellowJackets (8-4, 6-2 ASC) were led by another dominant pitching performance from senior Justin Jenkins. The Hallsville, Texas native struck out 10 and limited the Tigers to just five hits in the win to raise his record to 2-1. It is the third-consecutive appearance that Jenkins has struck out at least 10, plus it is his first complete game of the season and the sixth of his career. Taylor Empkey (pictured) and Kyle Jacobs each had two hits to pace an eight-hit attack.

The Tigers (9-6, 2-4 ASC) stranded a runner on third in the first and runners on first on four occasions in the loss. Five different players had a hit and starter Zack Tempke pitched five innings, allowing four hits and striking out five in the loss.

LETU got on the board in the first inning on a RBI single by David Perkins. Empkey started the threat with a one out walk. Then, he moved to second on a passed ball by the ETBU catcher. Next, Perkins brought in Empkey from second on a single after the ball was misplayed by ETBU in the outfield.

The YellowJackets scored twice in the sixth to stretch the advantage to 3-0. Again, Empkey and Perkins had a hand in the efforts. Empkey started the inning with a single for his first of two hits on the night; then, Perkins walked to put runners on first and second to end the evening for Tempke. A well placed sacrifice bunt by Dillon Yates moved Empkey and Perkins to second and third, respectively. Next, Ryan Bertram drove in Empkey from third and moved Perkins to third on a RBI single for a 2-0 lead in favor of LETU. Then, an error on a Kyle Jacobs ground ball plated Perkins from third to extend the lead to 3-0.

LETU plated its final run of the contest in the seventh inning. In the inning, Bryce Henry started the inning with a double down the left-field line. A Sean Sellers ground out moved him to third, then Henry would come around to score on another passed ball by ETBU. The Tigers did mount a threat in the ninth until the YellowJackets ended the game with a double play to secure the win.

Next, LeTourneau will host for a three-game series Arlington Baptist College. The action gets started with a game on Friday, Mar. 20 at 7 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 21 at 1 p.m.
