LETU Baseball Falls to Wiley, 10-4

A six-run third inning sparked Wiley College to a 10-4 win over host LeTourneau University in baseball action on Wednesday night at Conrad-Vernon Field in Longview.

The YellowJackets (8-5) fell behind 10-2 after the first four innings before scoring a run each in the seventh and eighth for the final margin. LeTourneau junior Dillon Yates and senior David Perkins each had two hits. Five different LETU relievers held the Wildcats to three unearned runs and struck out six over the final 6.2 innings.

Wiley (13-8) had 13 hits, including four from Marco Garcia in the win. The Wildcats, like the YellowJackets, utilized six-different pitchers in the win. Starter Gilberto Ruiz went the first five innings to pick up the win, scattering three hits and two runs – both unearned and struck out three for his first win on the season.

LeTourneau found itself behind 2-0 after the top of the first and cut the deficit to one in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Kyle Jacobs reached on an error and junior Taylor Empkey scored to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. With a one-run lead in the third, Wiley sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times on five hits and a pair of LETU errors. Three of the six runs came on a pair of homeruns by the visitors.

Trailing 8-1, LETU got back on the scoreboard in its half of the third. Empkey hit a sharp single to right field to start the inning that was misplayed the Wildcats, who alertly hustled to third. Next, Perkins picked up his first RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly. Wiley came right back with two runs on three hits in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead.

Perkins added his second RBI of the night in the seventh when he drove in Sean Sellers, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The final run of the night came in the eighth when Yates hit a solo home run with one out.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for LeTourneau, who will return to action on Friday night at 7 p.m. when they travel to Austin to face Concordia for a crucial three-game series.
