A three-run first and single runs in the third, fourth, sixth and ninth led Texas-Tyler to a 7-3 win over the LeTourneau University baseball team at the 2015 ASC Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday night in Austin.
The Patriots (32-10), who are the regular season champion and No. 1 seed, were led by its 2-3-4 part of its order. The No. 2 spot held by Logan Tucker accounted for three hits and No. 3 and No. 4 spot by Buddy McCoy and Blake Bonnin, respectively who accounted for two RBI each in the win. Paxton pitched 7.1 innings and struck out five in the win to improve to 10-2 on the 2015 season. In relief, Jacob Clark pitched the final 1.2 of one-hit baseball to close out the win.
The YellowJackets (18-16) stranded eight runners in the loss. LETU senior
David Perkins (pictured below) and junior
Brandon Applewhite (pictured above) had three and two hits, respectively in the loss. YellowJackets' starter
Cody Whitley pitched 5.2 innings, scattering nine hits and six runs (five earned) in the loss to fall to 3-7.
Three runs on two hits in the first inning contributed to an early lead for the cross-town rivals. Paxton escaped a threat in the second inning when the YellowJackets had runners on second and third with one out. The right hander got a strike out and a ground out to end the inning. UT Tyler added another run in the third, fourth and sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
With a six-run deficit in the eighth inning, LETU mounted a comeback. With one out, senior
Ryan Bertram walked on four-straight pitches. He moved to second on a single by junior
Dillon Yates to bring to the plate Perkins. The senior from Longview picked up his third hit of the night with a single up the middle to score Bertram from second for the first YellowJackets run. Then, LETU scored its second run of the inning on a ground out by Applewhite to cut the deficit to 6-2. The LETU offense was not done yet. Then, sophomore
Kyle Jacobs laced a single up the middle to make it a 6-3 contest. The rally ended with a ground out to third for the YellowJackets. UT Tyler added an insurance run in the ninth for the final margin.
David Perkins The loss drops LeTourneau to the loser's bracket, where it will next face No. 3 seed UT Dallas at 1 p.m. in an elimination game. Ironically, the YellowJackets have yet to face the Comets in 2015 as weather washed out the in-season series earlier this year.
