UTD Rallies to End Season for LETU Baseball

With a 1-1 count, two out and runners on first and second, in the bottom of the ninth, UT Dallas third baseman Brandon George hit a three-run home run to propel the Comets to a 6-5 win over the LeTourneau University baseball team at the 2015 American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The YellowJackets (18-17) entered the bottom of the ninth with a 5-1 lead against the No. 3 seeded Comets. The YellowJackets' Dillon Yates and Ryan Bertram had three and two hits, respectively in the loss. Bertram had three RBI and Yates added two more.

The Comets (27-16) rallied with a five-run ninth inning to advance into an elimination game, later on Friday against East Texas Baptist.

LeTourneau quickly built a 3-0 lead on the bat of Bertram, who had a RBI double in the first and a two-RBI triple in the second inning. UT Dallas cut into the lead in the third inning with a RBI single for a 3-1 lead in favor of the YellowJackets.

The lead remained two until Yates hit a two-run home run in the ninth for a 5-1 lead for the YellowJackets. LETU starting pitcher Jordan Carns, who was not involved in the decision, kept the Comets off the scoreboard as UTD stranded six runners in the final seven innings. Carns pitched 8.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (all earned) and struck out four in 123 pitches.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Carns gave up back-to-back walks and hit a batter to load the bases. Then, Jimmy Norris singled up the middle to score a pair for UTD to cut the deficit to 5-3. After a Comets' fielder's choice, it set the stage for the game-winning heroics by George.

The loss ends the season for the YellowJackets after making its second-consecutive appearance in the American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. The game also marked the final game for Josh Bailey, Ryan Bertram, Justin Jenkins, Jon Lewis, Landon Methvin, David Perkins, Caleb Pritchett, Ryan Todd and Cody Whitley, who all have given tireless contributions to the program on and off the field. Bailey, Bertram, Jenkins, Lewis, Methvin, Pritchett and Todd will earn their degrees from LETU in Saturday's commencement exercises.
