The LeTourneau University volleyball team saw Austin College rally to defeat the YellowJackets in the season opener, 18-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-9.
The YellowJackets (0-1) came out of the gates winning the first two sets for an early advantage over the visiting 'Roos. LeTourneau had 13 and 15 kills, respectively in the first two sets with seven different players recording a kill. In the defeat, LETU senior
Kayla Ronda had a double double with 17 kills and 12 digs in the defeat, plus sophomore
Savanna Stutts added 13 kills. Sophomore setter
Nicole Mosley had 31 assists and freshman
Bri Smith added 15 in her debut.
The 'Roos (1-0) hit .197 to .021 in the final three sets to spark the comeback efforts. Rebekah Bowden had 11 of her team-high 17 kills in the last three sets to spark the attack. She was joined in double digits by Madi McVay, who had a double double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
LETU started the match, hitting .294 to take the first set. Seven YellowJackets had a kills including sophomore
Dolores Kroese, who had a team-high three. Neither team managed to seize control of the second set until LETU scored six of the final eight points to take a two set lead.
The two teams exchanged the first six points of the third set until Austin College built a six-point lead, 12-6. The 'Roos never relinquished the lead as Bowden paced the attack with five kills and three block assists for the visitors en route to a 25-17 victory. Much like set three, the two teams went back and forth in the fourth set until a four-point spurt put the visitors ahead, 12-8. LeTourneau managed to cut the deficit to as close as two on a pair of occasions. Austin College scored three of the final four points en route to a 25-19 victory to even up the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set, LeTourneau raced out to a 6-1 lead that included a pair of kills by Stutts for the early lead. After an Austin College timeout, the 'Roos scored seven of the next eight points to tie the set at eight which prompted a LeTourneau timeout. After a LETU block by sophomore
A.J. Campbell put the host YellowJackets ahead 9-8, the 'Roos closed out the match on a 7-0 run to complete the comeback efforts.
LeTourneau will wrap up the opening week of action with a trip to California. The YellowJackets will travel to La Verne, California to participate in the Pacific Coast Classic, where they will face host La Verne (Fri., Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m.), California Lutheran (Fri., Sept. 4 at 8 p.m.), Pacific University (Sat., Sept. 5 at 11 a.m.) and Whittier College (Sat., Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m.)
