Two goals by sophomore
Aaron Hastings (pictured) – who scored in each half – propelled the LeTourneau University men's soccer team to a 2-2 tie against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Saturday afternoon.
Hastings, who is in his first season at LeTourneau, tied the contest at 1 in the 41
st minute with a low shot to the left from 18 yards. The Cypress, Texas native had the equalizer in the 83
rd minute when he headed in a corner kick from junior
Hunter Swift to the near post to tie the game. He finished the game with a match-high nine shots as LeTourneau goes to 2-2-1 on the season.
SAGU (2-2-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the 22
nd minute when S. Parker-Sturgeon ended a scoreless tie with a goal just past the LETU defense. Hastings tied it in 41
st minute but the Lions came back with a goal by Parker Sturgeon converted a corner kick with a shot to the lower portion of the box for a 2-1 lead in the 68
th minute.
With the game tied at 2, the two teams went to overtime and combined for five shots in the two extra 10-minute periods. Hastings had an attempt at a gamewinner in the 104
th and 106
th minute, respectively. The LETU defense led by reigning ASC Defensive Player of the Week
Miguel Cabrera withstood a late flurry by SAGU to come away with the tie. Cabrera ended the contest with six saves on 16 shots by the visitors.
LeTourneau will next host - Howard Payne on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. and UT Dallas on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in a pair of non-conference games. For the UT Dallas game, it is Greater Longview Soccer Association Day and members are encouraged to come out and watch the YellowJackets play.
