Howard Payne Edges LeTourneau Men's Soccer, 3-2 in Double Overtime

Dylan Person of Howard Payne scored with 1:01 left in the second overtime to propel the visitors to a 3-2 win over the LeTourneau University men's soccer team on Friday night in Longview.

LeTourneau (2-3-1) had rallied behind a 2-0 first half deficit on the strength of sophomore Aaron Hastings (pictured). The crafty midfielder from Cypress scored twice in the second half to tie the game and eventually force overtime.

Howard Payne (1-2) got on the board with a pair of first half goals. Shay Pate put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute when he knocked in a header to the lower corner of the goal for the early lead. Later in the half, Person scored his first goal of the contest when he struck a shot from the left side just past the LETU keeper on the right side in the 28th minute.

LETU came out in the second half and quickly challenged the defense of the visitors from Brownwood. In the 51st minute, Hastings emerged from inside the box and tapped a shot over the Howard Payne goalkeeper on the right side to cut the deficit to 2-1. The goal appeared to energize the home team, who would later equalize in the 60th minute. To tie the game, LETU junior Antonio Fernandez sent a long ball down the middle of the field where an alert Hastings fired a shot down the middle and between the legs of the HPU goalkeeper to even the game at 2.

Hastings had a pair of attempts at a hat trick in the 80th and 83rd minute, respectively that were saved by HPU goalkeeper Allen Chehadi. In the final seconds of regulation, a game-winning attempt from 35 yards out by Fernandez was pushed away by Chenadi to send the match into overtime.

Neither team was able to pose a offensive threat in the first overtime. Then, in the second overtime, a pair of LETU opportunities were halted by being offsides. Freshman Alec Wier had an attempt in the 108th minute on a free kick that was punched by away by Chenadi. Howard Payne capitalized nearly a minute later with the game-winning goal by Person, who took advantage of a low clearance and an empty box for the game-winning goal.

Next, LeTourneau will host UT Dallas on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the LETU Soccer Field in a non-conference match. LeTourneau University is inviting participants in the Greater Longview Soccer Association to the match to wear your GLSA shirt and sign up for a chance to participate in halftime contests with a chance to win prizes from Raising Cane's, Jucy's Taco and Whataburger.
