LETU Comes Up Short in 82-79 Loss to UT Dallas

UT Dallas scored six of the final nine points en route to an 82-79 win over the LeTourneau University men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Richardson.

The YellowJackets led for most of the contest, but it was the home team who closed out the contest with 12 of the final 17 points en route to the win.

LeTourneau (7-9, 5-3 ASC) senior CJ Edwards had a game-high 24 points on the strength of six 3-pointers in the loss. He was joined in double digits by freshman Caleb Loggins, who had 15 points after going 7-for-7 from the field and junior Jeff Martin, who had a double double with 12 points and 12 assists.

The 12 assists are the most in 2015-16 in the ASC, plus he is the 14th player in Division III to have at least 12 assists in a game. It is the second time that Martin has had double digit assists in a game in 2015-16, earlier this year he had 11 assists in the 85-73 win over Howard Payne.

Four Comets (9-3, 3-2 ASC) were able to land four in double figures, including 17 points from Caleb Banks, 11 each from Jon Hatcher and Kyle Coulter and 10 from Reagan Keogh.

LeTourneau led by as much as 12 in the contest when Martin picked up a steal and made a breakaway lay-up with 12:30 to go. Then, a resilient UT Dallas squad came back with 10 unanswered points to cut the deficit to two, 67-65.

Next, a 3-pointer by reserve Ben Smith put the host Comets ahead 67-66 with 6:16 to play and for the first time in the game. LeTourneau regained the lead when Edwards hit a 3-pointer for a 69-67 lead with 5:30 to go.

The YellowJackets and Comets each shared leads for the remainder of the contest. LETU sophomore Sam Talbert tied the game at 76 when he made a pair of free throws with 1:58 to play. Then, Keogh put the home team ahead for the remainder of the contest on back-to-back lay-ups.

A Colhoff 3-pointer cut the deficit to one, 80-79 with :44 to play, but that would be as close as the YellowJacketts would get.

LeTourneau will return home to host Belhaven on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. for Hawaiian Night.
