LETU Baseball Drops Pair to McMurry

The LeTourneau University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to host McMurry University on Sunday, losing game one (1-0) and game two (6-3).

The YellowJackets (5-9) were the tough-luck losers in game one as the host War Hawks plated the only run in the fifth inning to spoil another strong outing by LETU freshman Andrew Harlan.

In the loss, LETU stranded eight base runners and recorded six hits as senior Dylan Wadyko led the attack with two hits. After McMurry had scored on a RBI double in the fifth inning, LETU took advantage of a McMurry pitching change to load the bases with two outs before a line drive to center ended the threat.

Despite the loss, Harlan allowed just seven hits, an earned run and struck out six in facing 24 batters in the seven-inning contest.

In the nightcap, a five-run third inning proved to be the difference as the War Hawks posted a 6-3 win over the visiting YellowJackets.

LETU took a 1-0 lead in its half of the third inning on a RBI single by junior Kyle Jacobs, bringing in Taylor Empkey. McMurry came back in its half of the third with five runs on four hits including a three-run home run by Chris Baker. The host War Hawks added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 6-1.

The YellowJackets plated their final two runs of the weekend with a two-run home run by Taylor Empkey to start off the ninth inning. Earlier in the inning, senior Sean Sellers doubled to the gap in right center for his second hit of the game. Sellers, Empkey and Jacobs as well as sophomore Rayne Hobbs (pictured; photo by Jay Spencer) each had two hits in the loss.

The YellowJackets come back home for a three-game non-conference series against Denison University, who is making a trek throughout Texas for its Spring Break. The series will get underway on Friday, Mar. 18 at 7 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field, followed by another single game on Saturday, Mar. 19 at noon.
