The LeTourneau University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Louisiana College, winning game one, 3-2 and the nightcap, 7-2 to take the three-game series on Saturday in Longview.
Â
The YellowJackets (8-13, 5-7 ASC) in game one were led by freshman
Aaron Perkins, who had two hits and a run scored. Fellow freshman
Will Bradshaw was dominant on the mound, allowing just three hits, an earned run and eight strikeouts.
Perkins, in the No. 9 spot, led off the bottom of the third with a single, then he moved to second on a single by lead-off batter senior
Sean Sellers. Next, a two-RBI double by senior
Taylor Empkey in the gap in left-center of Conrad-Vernon Field put the YellowJackets ahead 2-0.Â
Louisiana College cut the deficit to one with a run in its half of the fifth. The YellowJackets got the run back in its half of the inning. Again, Perkins was a catalyst for the LETU offense with a single to start the inning; then Sellers reached on a fielder's choice. After a LETU pop out, junior
Kyle Jacobs extended his hitting streak with a double to left center, scoring Sellers from second to stretch the lead to 3-1.Â
A RBI ground out in the sixth by the Wildcats cut the deficit to one before Bradshaw closed out the game with three-straight strikeouts in the seventh for the win. The freshman from Longview picked up his first complete game and first collegiate win, lowering his ERA to 0.98.
In the nightcap, the YellowJackets gave freshman starter
Andrew Harlan an abundance of offensive support with nine hits and an early 6-0 lead through the first five innings.
Senior
Sean Sellers had a pair of hits including a solo home run and three runs scored to lead LeTourneau. Plus, junior
Jacob Simmons had two hits, a run scored and a RBI; in addition,Â
senior Taylor Empkey had a two-RBI triple in the second inning that put the YellowJackets ahead 3-0. Harlan nearly had a complete game, scattering 10 hits and allowing two runs to go along with a pair of strikeouts before handing the ball over to senior Bryce Henry, who made just one pitch to end the contest. With the win, Harlan is now 2-3 on the season.Â
