LETU Baseball Loses to ETBU in Series Opener, 8-4

East Texas Baptist built an early 4-0 lead en route to an 8-4 victory over the LeTourneau University baseball team on Friday in Marshall.
The Tigers (17-11, 8-5 ASC) scored three times in the first inning and added another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Junior Conner Combs and junior Jaxon Rader each had three hits to lead a 14-hit attack for East Texas Baptist. 
The YellowJackets (8-14, 5-8 ASC) had nine hits with a pair from junior Kyle Jacobs and freshman Lee Hosie to lead LeTourneau. 
After back-to-back hit by pitches and a sacrifice bunt, four-straight singles put ETBU ahead 3-0 in the first inning. After a RBI triple in the second inning, LeTourneau called on senior Boone Privette. 
The YellowJackets cut the deficit to two, 4-2, with back-to-back RBI doubles by junior Jacob Simmons and sophomore Rayne Hobbs in the fourth inning. The Tigers extended the lead to 6-2 in its half of the fourth. 
Simmons and Hobbs picked up their second RBIs of the night when they each reached on back-to-back walks with the bases loaded. A two-run eighth inning by ETBU provided the final margin.
For LeTourneau, in relief, Privette pitched 5.2 innings, allowed five hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out nine in a no decision. Starter Jordan Carns falls to 3-4 after a 1.1 innings pitched, allowing six hits and four runs (all earned). 
For ETBU, like the YellowJackets, they used three pitchers. In relief, senior Jimmy Russo pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits and struck out seven for his first win.
 
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Woods Field. Prior to the game, as part of NCAA Division III week, the two teams will be hosting a pre-game tailgate with free hot dogs for fans.
