LETU Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches in Memphis

LeTourneau University volleyball played two more matches at the Blues City Invite at Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon. The YellowJackets dropped the first match in five sets to Sewanee: University of the South and fell 3-1 to Birmingham-Southern College in the final match of the invite.

"Despite not finishing with any wins I am still proud of our team," said head coach Scott Peluso following the weekend. "We fought back again from a two set deficit to push Sewanee to five. BSC is a good team and taking the first set was a nice accomplishment. We still need to learn to stop runs by our opponent and convert in transition, but we still did some good things this weekend. We still have lots of room for improvement but this group never stops fighting so I have no doubt we will come ready to get better at practice on Monday and Tuesday in preparation for our home-opener on Wednesday."

The YellowJackets (4-6, 0-0 ASC) started the day against Sewanee: University of the South and fell behind early, dropping the first two sets (19-25, 22-25). LETU responded with two dominant sets storming back with 25-18 and 25-14 in the third and fourth sets. In the fifth and deciding set the Tigers were able to pull away with a final score of 9-15.

Junior Savanna Stutts (10) and senior Skylar Horan (9) led the attack for the YellowJackets. They were set up by junior Nicole Mosley and freshman Alexis Martinez who had 20 and 12 assists, respectively.

Mosley along with junior Elyse Wright each had three aces in the match against the Tigers. On the defensive end, Kelsie Jeffries (23) and Dolores Henson (13) led LETU in digs while senior Jenny Olejar, sophomore Morgan Weaver and Skylar Horan were big at the net combining for 10 blocks.

The fourth and final match at the Blues City Invite was against a very tough Birmingham-Southern College team. The YellowJackets got off to a great start stealing the first set 25-23, behind the attack of Dolores Henson and Skylar Horan and assists from Nicole Mosley and senior Korissa White. At the net Jenny Olejar came up big again with two solo blocks and three block assists in the match.

In the end the Panthers were too much, hitting .305 against the YellowJackets and took the next three sets and the match.

LeTourneau will return to Longview for the home opener on Wednesday night at 7 PM against Jarvis Christian College.
