LeTourneau University volleyball split a pair of matches today at the Blues City Invite hosted by Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
Â
The first match of the day was against the Majors of Millsaps College. The YellowJackets were dominant and swept the match 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-13).
"We had a really good day today," said head coach
Scott Peluso. "In our first match we were extremely efficient with our offense and hit very well. We were putting the ball away and only had six hitting errors in all three sets which is something we have really been working on. It was the first time in my tenure we have beaten Millsaps and I was impressed with our all-around play."
Â
The errors were the downfall of the Majors who committed 21 in the three set match. On the YellowJacket side of the net it was a balanced attack with
Dolores Henson (9),
Jenny Olejar (8), and
Savanna Stutts (8) leading the way. Senior
Korissa White and junior
Nicole Mosley each had 18 assists to set up the LETU hitters.
Kelsie Jeffries and freshman
Audrey Galindo led the defense with 11 and 10 digs respectively. Galindo also had three of the YellowJacket's six aces in the match.
Â
In the second match up of the day, LeTourneau faced off against the host Lynx of Rhodes College.
Â
The YellowJackets dropped the first two sets (21-25, 13-25) and looked to be headed for a third set exit, but the LETU squad was able to find their rhythm and battled back, winning sets three and four (25-20, 25-23) to force a deciding fifth set.
Â
The fifth set finished 13-15 in favor of the Lynx but Coach Peluso was still proud of the fight in his team.
Â
"The second match was one that really showed the character and fight of our team. Rhodes is a solid team. We lost the first two sets and were down by 8 in the third. We have emphasized that we need to play every point no matter the score and we did that. We fought back and pushed the match to 5. Even though we didn't take that last set I was so proud of how we came back. Rhodes may have been the best team we have faced so far so I am excited to keep improving as the season goes."
Â
Junior
Nicole Mosley filled up the stat sheet with 19 assists, 21 digs and 2 aces in the match while senior
Skylar Horan put home 16 kills. Freshman
Alexis Martinez had a career high eight assists. At the net
Jenny Olejar,
Skylar Horan and sophomore
Morgan Weaver combined for nine blocks for the YellowJackets.
LeTourneau will continue from the Blues City Invite with matches against Sewanee: The University of the South at 11 AM and Birmingham-Southern College at 3 PM in Memphis.
