Alyssa Pierce Walk Off Single Pushes YellowJackets to Senior Day Win

An extra-innings thriller in Longview was capped by a walk off single by Alyssa Pierce to earn the 6-5 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Senior Day.

It was the final game of the season at the Joyce Family Athletic Village for LeTourneau. It was also the final time stepping inside the lines of their home field for three YellowJacket seniors.

Kaitlyn Allen, Whitney Judd and Courtney Matulis were each recognized before the start of the game with a short ceremony highlighting their career achievements and accolades. They were also presented with gifts from their teammates and coaches.

Each team would get off to a solid start with both scoring two runs in the first inning. LeTourneau (13-21, 8-19 ASC) broke the tie with a Kelsi Coleman RBI in the bottom of the third inning. Madison Gray scored one of her team-high three runs.

Freshman Taylor MacKenzie would extend the YellowJacket lead in the fourth inning. A single up the middle would bring home senior Courtney Matulis and Gray and push the lead to 5-2. Matulis swiped her 57th career stolen base to put herself in scoring position. The Pittsburg, Texas native is the all-time leader for the LeTourneau softball program.

The Cowgirls would score two runs in the fifth and add another in the sixth to pull even heading to the final inning.

Neither squad could manifest any offense in the seventh, so it was extra softball in the final home weekend of the season.

Faith Genoway struck out two in the top of the eighth inning to give her offense a chance. After Gray singled up the middle, she stole second to put herself in scoring position. That is when Alyssa Pierce had the biggest hit of her young YellowJacket career. Her single to left center brought home Gray and sent off her teammates with a Senior Day victory.

Junior Ashley Burdine started and allowed four runs on nine hits. Burdine struck out two and forced seven groundouts in her 4.1 inning effort. Sophomore Faith Genoway allowed just an unearned run over the final 3.2 innings to improve to 8-8 on the season.

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season LeTourneau will head to Jackson, Mississippi for a 3-game series with Belhaven. The American Southwest Conference series will start on Thursday at 3 p.m. with a Friday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
