POSTGAME INTERVIEW
LONGVIEW --
Oliver Placencia attempted three shots. All of them went in.
That was the kind of night it was for LeTourneau University men's soccer team, which pitched a 6-0 shutout of Howard Payne Thursday night at LETU Soccer Field. Four different players scored in a dynamite display of soccer for the host YellowJackets, who improved to 6-8-2 overall, 4-5-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
"It was amazing to get a team win, get everyone out there, get new people on the scoresheet," Placencia said after notching his team-leading seventh goal of the season. "I couldn't do it without my teammates, obviously."
Placencia scored his first goal of the night a second into the 23rd minute when he deposited a pass from
Luis De La Torre for his fifth goal of the year. That was the only goal of the first half -- one in which LETU outshot HPU, 16-2.
In the 59th minute,
Blaine Wright scored his first goal of the year on an assist from
Landry Poppen to give the host YellowJackets a two-goal cushion. Poppen then cashed himself seven minutes later when he banged in a setup from
Chancey Davis to make it 3-0.
Placencia got untracked again in the 78th minute for his second goal of the game on an assist from
Isaiah Johnson. He recorded the hat trick 3:30 later as he dribbled up the right side and scooted the ball past the visiting Yellow Jackets' goalkeeper in the left side of the net. Johnson sent the ball to
Carlos Castro, whose through ball to Placencia led to LeTourneau's 5-0 lead.
Tanner Johnson tacked on another goal in the 89th minute on another assist from Castro to complete the rout.
LETU goalkeeper
Austin Dunegan, making his second start, had five saves in recording his first career shutout and victory.
"It feels really good," Dunegan said. "It was amazing bouncing back after a tough loss last week."
LeTourneau finished with a season-high 29 shots, 12 of them on goal. The six goals matched a season high for the YellowJackets, who sit in a tie for sixth in the ASC standings with two games remaining, beginning with Saturday's 3:30 p.m. home finale.
"Hopefully we'll take the momentum into the next one, a must-win game," Placencia said. "Then we'll worry about next week. Let's just finish off the homestand real good."
