LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team dropped its Pink Out match to American Southwest Conference East Division-leading Texas at Dallas Friday, 25-15, 25-19, 25-14.
The YellowJackets (14-12, 7-6) remain second in the ASC East, a match ahead of East Texas Baptist (13-12, 6-7) with one league match remaining 7 p.m. next Friday at Louisiana College, whom LETU swept at home. LeTourneau will host Arlington Baptist 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the final home match of the season.
UT Dallas (20-4, 12-1) is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll. The Comets will host the ASC Tournament beginning Nov. 7.
LETU forced six ties and two lead changes in the first set, and hit .310 with 10 kills and one attack error. But UTD put away 19 balls with one error, while hitting .545, and converting 75 percent of its sideout chances. The YellowJackets converted on 45 percent of their sideouts in the opening set. Trailing 17-10, the Jackets used a 4-0 run to pull within three on a kill by
Lexie Welton. After another kill by Welton kept LETU within three, 18-15, the Comets closed out the set with seven straight points.
UT Dallas took an 13-8 lead to open the second set before
Mikayla Thomas and
Natalie Davenport had a block. Following one of the Comets' 12 sideouts, LETU picked up a pair of points on a UTD error and a kill by Crow to draw within 14-11. After the two teams traded points over the next three serves, LeTourneau went on a 5-0 run, triggered by
Natalie Connelly's kill. Thomas slammed down a winner prior to three straight Comets errors on
Cam Taylor's serve, vaulting the YellowJackets ahead, 17-16. But UT Dallas responded with a 5-0 run to take command, 21-17, and the Jackets could not recover, despite back-to-back putaways by Thomas.
LeTourneau forced three ties and three lead changes early in the third set, and took a 5-3 lead on Crow's kill. UT Dallas jumped in front, 8-5 before the Jackets picked up two of the next three points on Comets' errors. But UTD ran off nine straight to take an 18-7 lead. The Jackets went on a 5-0 run of their own, pulling within 20-13 on a kill by
Julie Smith, but it was too little too late.
UT Dallas hit .315 with 47 kills in 108 swings. LETU hit .110 with 25 kills in 100 attacks. The Comets had 10 aces, while the YellowJackets didn't record any.
Thomas had eight kills and three blocks. Crow had eight kills and nine digs.
Cam Taylor finished with 11 digs.
