Big Second Half Lifts LETU Past Centre College

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Coming off maybe its most impressive performance of the season a day earlier, LeTourneau University's women's basketball team responded with a 65-59 win over Centre College in the TownePlace Suites Classic at Oglethorpe Tuesday.

The YellowJackets improved to 3-4, and will have an 11-day layoff before hosting the LETU Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29 at Solheim Arena. Centre College fell to 3-6. It was the Jackets' second win in three games.

LeTourneau outscored Centre, 17-10, in the fourth quarter to pull away in a game where both teams never built more than a six-point lead. Micayla Mikulski finished with a season-high 17 points, seven rebounds and seven steals, while going 5 of 10 from the field. Scruffy Hopkins added a season-best 10 points, nine boards and two steals, while hitting 3 of 5 field goals, including both of her triple tries.

Trailing 27-22 at halftime, LETU opened the third quarter with an 11-5 run to take a one-point lead on Kyndall Hardeman's layup at the 6:18 mark. The Colonels reclaimed control, 42-38, on a three-pointer by Josie Thacker. In a back-and-forth stretch, Centre inched ahead by five, but the Jackets got it down to one three different times the rest of the quarter on a basket by Flora Akingbade and a pair of free throws each by Malacia Guy and Hopkins. Hopkins' two free throws with 21 seconds left in the period sent the YellowJackets into the fourth down 49-48.

Mikulski scored nine of her 17 points, and had three steals in the third quarter.

Hopkins canned a 3-pointer 1:01 into the final period as LeTourneau tied it at 51-51. With 5:32 remaining, Keauna Whitfield buried a 3 to give LETU its fifth lead of the game, 56-53. It was a lead the YellowJackets wouldn't relinquish after Whitfield sank a free throw, and Mikulski knocked down a jumper in the paint to extend the margin to six. Kat Wilson scored with 11 seconds remaining as the Colonels cut the gap to two, but Vanessa Cruz sank four free throws down the stretch to put it away.

Whitfield and Cruz each scored eight points, and combined for eight assists. Hardeman had seven points on 3 of 6 shooting. Wilson finished with 16 points, and Payton Herold had 13 for Centre College.

The YellowJackets went 21-for-30 from the stripe. The 21 free throws signaled a season high. The Colonels were 8-for-9. LETU outscored Centre, 20-10, in points off turnovers.

LeTourneau shot 42 percent from the field -- its highest percentage since hitting 46.5 percent of its shots in the season opener 35 days earlier.

The Jackets will entertain Benedictine at 3 p.m. Dec. 28 and Blackburn at 3 p.m. Dec. 29 in the LETU Holiday Classic. East Texas Baptist will also play the two Illinois schools as part of the tournament.
