YellowJackets Rally to Beat Dallas in 5

ARLINGTON, Texas -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to beat the University of Dallas in a five-set marathon Tuesday night. The YellowJackets pulled out the 18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-12 victory to move over the .500 mark.

LeTourneau (7-6) trailed Dallas (7-10) by a score of 11-9 in the fifth set, but ran off four unanswered points to seize control. Taylor Smith had three kills down the stretch, Kianna Crow added another, and Mikayla Thomas delivered a big block as the YellowJackets completed the comeback. LETU and Dallas battled to six ties and three lead changes in the final set.

Crow finished with a career-high 26 kills and five blocks, matched a career-best 21 digs, and hit .282. Thomas had a career-high 11 blocks, including three solos, and banged nine kills. Smith had 10 kills and 17 digs. Natalie Davenport had 40 assists and 17 digs. Cam Taylor finished with 25 digs, eight assists and three aces. Audrey Galindo had 14 digs and two aces. Natalie Connelly had six kills and two blocks.

The YellowJackets went on a 4-0 run midway through the third set to take a 15-7 lead after a pair of putaways by Smith. Kiari Johnson and Crow combined on a block to extend the lead to 20-11. The Crusaders cut the gap to 22-18 on a kill by Abigail Porras, but Smith put away the next ball, Dallas committed a ballhandling error, and after a pair of Dallas points, Thomas slammed down a winner to pull the Jackets within 2-1 in the match.

LeTourneau had 15 kills and five errors in 42 swings for a .238 hitting percentage in the third set. Dallas hit .163 with 13 kills and six errors in 43 attempts.

LETU jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the fourth set after Thomas and Davenport came up with a block. The Crusaders cut it to 10-8 following a LeTourneau hitting error. Crow had a kill to push the Jackets ahead, 17-12. Dallas got within four three times, the last on a kill by Porras, but back-to-back attack errors by the Crusaders gave the YellowJackets a six-point cushion. Following a LETU hitting error, Thomas authored a kill and a solo block, and the Crusaders committed an attack error to tie the match at 2-2.

The YellowJackets had 15 kills and five errors in 39 swings for a .256 hitting percentage in the fourth set. The Crusaders were held to .054 on 10 kills and eight errors in 37 swings.

In the decisive final set, Smith fired off an ace to put the Jackets up, 4-3. Dallas reeled off the next four points to take a three-point advantage. A pair of Crusader errors and a kill by Crow tied it at 7-7. After swapping points over the next four serves, Dallas used kills by Porras and Andriella Wagner to take an 11-9 lead. But following a LeTourneau timeout, the YellowJackets used a Crusaders error and a putaway by Smith to pull even. After a Dallas timeout, Smith and Crow banged down kills to put LETU in front, 13-11, prompting another Crusaders timeout. Following that sideline talk, Thomas rang up a block before Porras halted the YellowJackets' 5-0 run with a kill to make it 14-12. But Smith pounded a winner on the final serve to seal the deal.

LeTourneau outblocked Dallas, 13-6. The YellowJackets had a .160 attack rate. Dallas hit .181.

Porras had 20 kills and 11 digs for the Crusaders. Ellise Anable had 10 kills, 14 digs and two aces. Larissa Ramirez finished with 50 assists and 22 digs.

LeTourneau will host a five-team American Southwest Conference Crossover beginning 3 p.m. Friday. The six-match event will continue Saturday, with the second day set to begin at 10 a.m.
