Jackets Fall to McMurry in ASC Crossover

LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau's volleyball team dropped a five-set match to McMurry in the American Southwest Conference Crossover Friday at Solheim Arena. The YellowJackets fell, 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 27-25, 15-9.

LETU moved to 7-7 overall, 1-3 in the ASC. McMurry bumped its record to 10-5, 1-3.

With the match tied at a set apiece, the YellowJackets took a 10-5 lead in the third after Audrey Galindo reeled off six straight service points, including a pair of aces. The War Hawks used a 5-0 run to tie it. Kianna Crow's kill pushed LETU's lead to 16-13, and after a McMurry sideout, the YellowJackets climbed up 18-14 on a kill by Natalie Connelly. Mikayla Thomas' putaway pushed the lead to 20-15. Three straight War Hawks errors made it 23-16. After the two teams swapped points over the next three serves, Thomas banged down set point to give the Jackets a 2-1 lead in the match.

LeTourneau had nine kills and three errors in the third set. McMurry had 10 kills and 12 errors.

In the fourth set, the Jackets jumped out to an 8-6 lead on a block by Taylor Smith and Thomas. The War Hawks took a 12-11 lead on a kill by Justice McGowan. After the two sides battled through six ties over the next 11 serves, LETU capped a 3-0 run highlighted by kills from Smith and Crow to take a 19-17 lead. McMurry responded with a 3-0 run of its own to jump back ahead, 20-19. The YellowJackets answered, running off the next three points with back-to-back putaways by Smith to go up, 22-20. Connelly's kill moved LeTourneau to match point, but the War Hawks tied it at 24-24 on Tyler Richardson's kill. Thomas gave the Jackets another chance to put it away after hammering home a winner, but McMurry answered again, this time with the final three points of the set to send the match to a fifth.

LETU hit .282 in the fourth set. McMurry had a .318 attack percentage.

The War Hawks opened up a 6-2 lead in the final set, but a kill by Smith and pair of Cam Taylor service points pulled the YellowJackets within 6-5. McGowan pushed the War Hawks up 10-7 with a kill before Crow's kill forced a sideout. McMurry extended its lead to 12-8 on a block Jordyn Burnell and Kianni Mitchell before Crow had a putaway. But the War Hawks closed out the match with the final three points.

McGowan had 16 kills, and hit .371. Burnell had 11 kills and 10 digs. Lauryn Davis finished with 30 assists, and Brynn Warnack added 23 for the War Hawks. Thomas had 13 kills, and hit .462. Crow had 19 kills and 12 digs. Smith finished with 15 kills and 19 digs. Natalie Davenport had 52 assists. Connelly had seven kills. Taylor had 28 digs.

The YellowJackets were outblocked, 14-4. McMurry had seven aces to LeTourneau's three. The War Hawks finished with a .217 hitting percentage, while the Jackets had a .165.

LeTourneau will host Sul Ross State at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Hardin-Simmons at 2 p.m.
