LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team did something it had never done before.
The YellowJackets beat Hardin-Simmons for the first time in school history to put a bow on a pair of victories at the American Southwest Conference Crossover Saturday at Solheim Arena. LeTourneau defeated Sul Ross State, 25-20, 26-28, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10, in the first match Saturday. LETU swept HSU, 25-16, 25-13, 25-18, to wrap up the three-match weekend.
LeTourneau moved two games over .500 overall, and 3-3 in the ASC. Sul Ross State fell to 8-7, 1-4. Hardin-Simmons dropped to 4-8, 1-4.
The Jackets hit .242 against SRSU, attacking over .215 in four of the five sets. SRSU hit .162. LETU hit .242 against HSU, which included a .429 attack rate in the middle set. Hardin-Simmons hit .038, and was held to a negative attack percentage in two sets.
Trailing 2-1 in the match against Sul Ross State, the YellowJackets built a 14-9 lead in the fourth set on a kill by
Taylor Smith.
Kianna Crow and
Natalie Connelly combined on a block to push the Jackets up, 18-11. A block and a kill by Connelly, and a kill by
Lexie Welton gave LETU a 23-13 advantage. The Lobos cut the gap to seven after winning the next three points, but a putaway by Smith and a SRSU setting error tied the match at 2-2.
Tied at 7-7 in the decisive fifth set, LeTourneau went on a 4-0 run, which included kills by Welton and Smith. The Lobos pulled within 12-10, but putaways by
Mikayla Thomas and Crow, sandwiched between an SRSU error, gave the Jackets the win.
Crow finished with a career-high 32 kills, 18 digs and two blocks, while hitting .338.
Natalie Davenport had a season-high 56 assists. Thomas had 16 kills, three blocks and an ace. Smith had eight kills and 20 digs. Connelly finished with eight kills.
Cam Taylor had 31 digs and an ace.
In the sweep of the Cowgirls, the YellowJackets committed only three hitting errors over the final two sets.
Connelly's block gave LETU a 10-3 lead in the second set. The Jackets extended the lead to 18-7 during a five-point run, highlighted by back-to-back putaways by Crow and an ace by Smith. The Cowgirls pulled within 20-12, but Connelly had two kills, and the YellowJackets secured five of the last six points in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
LeTourneau opened a 15-9 lead in the third set on a kill by Crow and a Hardin-Simmons ballhandling error. Smith's kill pushed the advantage to 18-12. The YellowJackets used a three-point run, capped on a kill by Crow, to go ahead 21-13. HSU drew within 23-17, but LETU grabbed two of the last three points to seal the victory.
Crow had nine kills, an ace and a solo block. Smith had seven kills and 11 digs. Connelly finished with seven kills, two solo blocks and a .600 hitting percentage. Taylor had 19 digs. Thomas finished with five kills, two aces and a .625 attack rate. Davenport had 25 assists.
LeTourneau will play at St. Thomas in Houston 7 p.m. Tuesday.
