Volleyball Splits Final Matches in Colorado

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Colorado College's Spike it Up Classic Saturday, falling in three sets to La Verne before sweeping Willamette.

The YellowJackets (4-4) beat the Bearcats, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23, in their final match at the tournament. They lost to La Verne earlier in the day, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22.

In the win, Kianna Crow had 19 kills, three blocks and eight digs, while hitting .300. Lexie Welton had nine kills, and hit .333. Taylor Smith finished with eight kills, 17 digs and two of the Jackets' six aces. Mikayla Thomas had seven kills two block assists, and hit .294. Natalie Davenport had 38 assists and nine digs.

Jennifer Lane had 11 kills, and Natalie Klotz 10 for the Bearcats, who were held under a .170 attack rate in all three sets. LeTourneau hit .256, which included a .286 percentage in the second set when the YellowJackets committed only two hitting errors in 42 swings.

It was a match that feature 21 ties and 21 lead changes.

In the loss to the Leopards, LETU had 18 kills in the second set, but couldn't maintain its 23-20 lead. After La Verne (3-5) used a four-point swing to take a 24-23 lead, Welton's putaway tied the score at 24. But the Leopards secured the final two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. LeTourneau managed just eight kills in the third set, while La Verne put away 18 balls to close the deal.

Smith had 10 kills and nine digs against the Leopards, who hit .265 to the YellowJackets' .177. Thomas had eight kills, two blocks and two aces, and hit .286. Crow had nine kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Davenport finished with 32 assists and an ace. Welton had seven kills and a .316 attack rate.

Haley Celaya had 20 kills, and Darrah Jones 11 for the Leopards.

LeTourneau will play at East Texas Baptist in the American Southwest Conference opener 6 p.m. Tuesday.
