JACKSON, Miss. –
Nate West continued to do his thing, and LeTourneau University men's basketball team followed suit.
West recorded his second straight triple-double, and LETU beat host Belhaven, 95-73, Thursday night. West finished with 31 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for his American Southwest Conference-leading fifth career triple-double. It is his third this season.
LeTourneau (12-4, 5-2 ASC) shot 58 percent, including 67 percent in the second half in a runaway win. The YellowJackets held Belhaven (7-9, 4-3) to 31 percent shooting. It marked LETU's ninth straight win over Belhaven.
"I thought the guys were focused for 40 minutes tonight," Jackets head coach
Dan Miller said. "Belhaven had been playing really good, and we knew it would take a complete game to win at their place."
John Argue scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three blocks. He was 6 of 9 from the field before fouling out.
Justin Moore added 10 points, nine rebounds and a steal.
Andrew Eberhardt,
Warren Richardson and
Elijah Gerber each scored eight for the Jackets, who outrebounded the Blazers, 43-27.
The Jackets outscored the Blazers, 58-36, and hit 21 of 33 field goals in the second half. LETU's bench outscored Belhaven, 26-14.
"We wanted to get the ball inside, and Nate's ability to get into the paint was a big key to the game," Miller said.
West hit a three-pointer with 2:39 remaining in the first half, spotting LeTourneau a 37-25 lead. The Blazers, who went 22 of 27 from the free throw line, made four straight from the stripe, and Joshua Roberts canned a 3-pointer to pull the Blazers within nine at the intermission.
The Blazers cut it to five early in the second half, but West scored in transition at the 16:28 mark to stretch the differential out to 13. Belhaven got within nine again, following a pair of Brosnan Cooks free throws before Argue converted a layup, and Eberhardt knocked down back-to-back triples to put LETU ahead 17. West canned a trey, and Gerber scored in transition to grow the lead to 22 with 9:33 remaining.
Belhaven never recovered.
"The one thing we need to improve on from this game is valuing the basketball," Miller said after his team committed 19 turnovers to Belhaven's eight. "Nineteen turnovers is way too high when our goal is to be in single digits.
West was 8-for-9 from the free throw line, and Moore went 2-for-4 – the only Jackets awarded trips to the stripe. Cooks was 10 of 12, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds and six assists. Luke Couch added 13 points for the Blazers.
The YellowJackets will meet Louisiana College 3 p.m. Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana.
"We are proud of the guys for getting a tough ASC road win," Miller said, "and tomorrow we will have to refocus to prepare for a really good Louisiana College team."
