LeTourneau Stops Belhaven on Road

JACKSON, Miss. – Make it three in a row.

LeTourneau University women's basketball team won its third consecutive game, beating Belhaven, 85-74, on the road Thursday. It bumped the YellowJackets' record to 9-7 overall, 5-2 in the American Southwest Conference. Belhaven fell to 10-6, 3-4.

The Jackets outscored the Blazers, 28-12, in the third period to flip an eight-point halftime lead for Belhaven into an eight-point advantage for LETU. Scruffy Hopkins' layup at the 7:21 mark in the third gave the YellowJackets a 41-40 lead. Micayla Mikulski tripled with 5:14 on the clock to push the gap to 48-43. Mikulski's jumper with 3:26 remaining in the period stretched the Jackets' lead to 11.

Jordan McClenton sank two free throws, and Mikulski, who finished with 30 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and five assists, knocked down a jumper to extend the lead to 14. The Blazers ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, putting LETU up 60-52 entering the fourth.

Peyton Papenburg's layup to open the final quarter brought the Blazers within six before Malacia Guy buried a three-pointer following an offensive rebound by Hopkins. Mikulski's field goal with 7:00 remaining made it a 12-point LeTourneau lead. Keke Lyles sank a pair of free throws as Belhaven cut it to eight 37 seconds later. But Guy answered again with another 3-pointer just past the midway point of the fourth period, and Keauna Whitfield ended a 2:14 scoring drought for both teams with a lay-in to bump the lead back to 13 to put it away.

Mikulski shot 13 of 17 from the field in her career-high night. It was the first time this season she's scored over 20 points.

McClenton had a season-high 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting. She was 6-for-8 from the free throw line, and accounted for a block and a steal. Whitfield finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal. Hopkins had eight points, seven assists, three steals and four rebounds. Vanessa Cruz added eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Guy scored eight points.

LeTourneau shot 45 percent from the floor – its best since a 46.5 performance in the season opener. It was the third time this season the YellowJackets shot over 40 percent.

LETU outscored Belhaven, 48-28, in the paint.

The YellowJackets will meet Louisiana College 1 p.m. Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana.
