RICHARDSON, Texas – LeTourneau University men's basketball team lost to the University of Texas at Dallas, 105-89, Thursday night.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the YellowJackets (15-5, 8-3 American Southwest Conference). It was the first loss since dropping the earlier meeting to the Comets (15-5, 9-2). LETU fell a game behind UTD in the ASC East.
Justin Moore scored 20 points, had nine rebounds and two blocks.
Nate West finished with 19 points, six assists and five rebounds. West broke the ASC all-time record for three-pointers when he hit his 310
th career triple with 9:40 to play. He broke Concordia Texas' Joel McDonald's mark of 309 set in 2009.
LETU led 51-49 at halftime, but UTD outscored the YellowJackets, 56-38, in the second half.
"UTD did a great job controlling the paint tonight," LeTourneau coach
Dan Miller said. "Credit them on how they played."
UT Dallas outscored LeTourneau, 64-26, in the paint.
The Jackets built its largest lead, 31-25, with 8:30 to play in the first half when
Elijah Gerber scored in the paint. The Comets erased the deficit with a 6-0 run over the next 1:15.
Andrew Eberhardt's three-pointer at the 5:58 mark put LeTourneau ahead, 35-31. West hit one of his three triples 1:30 later as the YellowJackets climbed to a five-point lead.
Kolton Pruitt's layup with 2:46 to go capped a 6-0 Comets run as UT Dallas took a 43-42 lead.
Kyle Matthews scored on the Jackets' next possession as LETU regained control. The two teams traded leads four times the rest of the half. West hit a half-court shot, and was fouled to send the YellowJackets into the break up, 51-49.
LeTourneau shot 55.56 percent from the field in the first half, and went 8 of 16 from 3-point range. UT Dallas shot 59.38 percent, and 1 of 4 from beyond the arc.
The Comets opened the second half on a 14-3 run, taking a 63-54 lead on Xavier Ferrell's three.
Korrin Taylor sank two free throws with 14:24 to play as LeTourneau pulled within seven. But the Comets outscored the Jackets, 16-4, over a four-minute span to stretch the lead to 19. LeTourneau never recovered.
The YellowJackets shot 9 of 29 in the second half. The Comets were 20 of 38.
Eberhardt scored 11 points on 3 of 6 shooting, and had a block and a steal. Matthews finished with eight points and two steals. Jalen Weber had 28 points, Pruitt added 27, and Hans Burwitz 24 for the Comets.
UT Dallas outrebounded LeTourneau, 41-31.
"We need to refocus quickly to be ready to play at Ozarks," Miller said. "Our guys know it's about bouncing back and staying together, so we will be ready to get in the gym tomorrow and prepare."
