Jackets Overcome Ozarks in Second Half

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – LeTourneau needed a second half comeback to pick up a 79-74 road victory at Ozarks Saturday.

With the game tied in the second half, Andrew Eberhardt buried a triple, and Nate West knocked down a field goal to give LeTourneau a 67-62 lead. Darnel Renelique's layup with 5:41 to play pulled Ozarks within, 69-66. Cory Wilhelm tied the game at 70 with a jumper at the 2:56 mark.

West sank two free throws the next trip down the floor, and then buried a three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining as the YellowJackets (16-5, 9-3 American Southwest Conference) went up 75-70. Jacobe Davis scored on an offensive putback with 1:27 remaining as the Eagles cut it to three, but West and Justin Moore each sank a pair of free throws down the stretch.

West finished with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists. Moore had 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Eagles opened up a 14-point lead 3:32 into the second half when Tim Turpin canned a three-pointer. The Jackets went on a 7-0 run, capped by Kyle Matthews' layup at the 14:41 mark to cut the gap to 54-47. Moore scored 1:17 later as LETU closed within four.

Ozarks bumped its lead back to eight on Bryson Johnson's basket before West scored, and then came up with a steal and two free throws to slice the Eagles' lead to 62-60 with 9:07 remaining. Elijah Gerber tied the game, following a defensive rebound by Matthews.

The YellowJackets shot 45 percent in the first half, going 14 of 31. The Eagles shot 45.7 percent, going 16 of 35.

"Down 14 on the road in the second half is not how we drew that up, but proud of the guys for their fight until the end and finding a way to win," LETU coach Dan Miller said. "Ozarks played a great game, and executed all night so we had to be refocused. We need to stay out of foul trouble and rebound better, going forward."

John Argue had 13 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal before fouling out. Eberhardt and Gerber each scored 10 points. Matthews had nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Davis finished with 17 points, and Wilhelm 12 for the Eagles, who outrebounded the Jackets, 42-39.

"Kyle Matthews' defense and rebounding in the second half was huge in our win," Miller said.

Korrin Taylor gave LETU an 11-4 lead as the Jackets opened the game on a tear. Ozarks pulled within three at the 14:52 mark, but the YellowJackets crept back out to an eight-point lead when Argue knocked down a jumper 5:32 later. The Eagles went on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to take a 31-30 lead on Davis' layup. Eberhardt tied it at 35-35, but the Eagles outscored the Jackets, 7-3, the rest of the half to take a 42-38 lead into the intermission.

Moore scored nine points in the first half. West, Gerber and Argue each had seven. Davis had 11 points, and Wilhelm 10 points and 10 rebounds at the break.

"We've had a lot of road games this season, so we are excited to get back and focus on each game on this four-game homestand," Miller said.

LeTourneau will host Concordia Texas 7:30 p.m. Thursday to begin the four-game homestand to close the regular season.
