Women's Hoops Trips up Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – LeTourneau University women's basketball team moved back over the .500 mark after beating Ozarks, 72-59, Saturday.

The YellowJackets (11-10, 7-5 American Southwest Conference) put an end to a three-game skid in the toughest portion of its schedule. LETU swept the season series from Ozarks (5-16, 0-12). LeTourneau crept back into sole possession of third place in the ASC East after Belhaven lost at Hardin-Simmons.

LeTourneau raced out to a 39-16 halftime lead. The YellowJackets shot 14 of 32 in the first half. The Eagles were 6 of 16, and 0 of 4 from three-point range.
With 6:48 to play in the first half, Bailey Lightfoot canned a three-pointer to give LETU a 28-8 lead. Kyndall Hardeman's layup inside the last minute made it 39-14.

Carly Grace Dougan hit a three-pointer at the 5:53 mark of the third period to bring Ozarks within 11. Malacia Guy sank two free throws, and Lightfoot buried another three to push the lead back to 17. After Micayla Mikulski sank a free throw to put LETU up, 52-34, the Eagles closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to pull within, 55-43.

Ozarks outscored LeTourneau, 27-16, in the third period.

Kerrigan Bradshaw made a layup to pull the Eagles within 10 to open the fourth, but Scruffy Hopkins hit a 3-pointer, Vanessa Cruz sank a free throw, and Keauna Whitfield hit two more to bump the lead back to 16 with 7:39 to go. Hopkins scored with 5:12 on the clock to put the YellowJackets up, 67-49. The Eagles drew within 13 with 2:31 to play, but the Jackets held on.

Guy scored a season-high 17 points, and had three steals. She was 3 of 6 from the floor and 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Lightfoot had 12 points, going 3 of 6 from three-point range, and had two steals. Hopkins had 11 points, two steals and a block. Mikulski had eight points and eight rebounds.

The YellowJackets shot 22 of 56, including 8 of 24 from long distance. They were 20 of 30 at the free throw line. The Eagles were 18 of 54 from the floor, and 3 of 18 from the three-point line. They went 20 of 26 at the stripe.

LETU scored 21 points off 21 Ozarks turnovers. LeTourneau came away with 14 steals, and outrebounded Ozarks, 44-35. The Jackets' bench outscored the Eagles, 38-10.

LeTourneau will host Concordia Texas 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
