AUSTIN, Texas – Concordia (Texas) late set rallies delayed LETU volleyball's chance at clinching a spot in next month's conference tournament Friday at the Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornado's won the final three games in the four-set match (10-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23), improving to 8-13 overall, including 8-7 in American Southwest Conference Action. The Yellowjackets fell to 13-8, 8-6.
After being dominated in the first set, CTX outscored LETU eight of the final 12 points, evening the match 1-1. The 'Jackets appeared poised to grab a 2-1 advantage, leading 22-19 in game three. The Tornados capitalized on five miscues by the visitors, moving in front 2-1 with the two-point win.
Six points from forcing a fifth and final game, things unraveled once again for LETU. CTX rejected four shots, dropping in two service aces and a pair of miscues by the Yellowjackets sealed the comeback.
With a week left in the regular season, LETU is tied with East Texas Baptist for fourth place, with the Yellowjackets holding the tiebreaker, due to sweeping the season series. Concordia has one less match and trails both squads by a half game for the sixth and final qualifying spot.
A win in their final four contests of the campaign or a loss by both Hardin-Simmons and McMurry secures a place in the tournament for the Yellowjackets.
LETU is unable to finish any higher than second but would need help as UT Dallas is three games in front. Sul Ross owns an advantage of a half game; the teams meet in Longview the final week of the regular schedule.
The 'Jackets final contest away from Solheim in the regular season is in Belton, Texas against Mary Hardin-Baylor tomorrow at 2 p.m. Despite a 3-2 defeat against UT Dallas tonight, the Cru remains atop the standings at 15-1, claiming at least a tie for the regular-season title.
