ATLANTA – LeTourneau women's basketball started its two-game road trip off to a good one, defeating Emory University 65-54 Friday night at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
The YellowJackets put together a balanced offensive attack with four players scoring in double figures. Senior
Keauna Whitfield led LETU with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals.
Allaira Jones and
Ajanae Thomas tallied 13 points apiece with eight and six rebounds, respectively.
Kyndall Hardeman chipped in a season high 11 points and seven rebounds.
After a deadlocked first quarter at 12, LeTourneau started the second period with a 9-2 run after Jones sunk a free-throw followed by Whitfield netting a jumper. LETU led 21-14 midway through the quarter. The Eagles of Emory would not go away, sparking a run of its own to cut the Jacket lead two when Erin Martin made a layup. Whitfield stopped the Emory run after swishing two free throws, and back-to-back buckets by Hardeman and
Ty Moon pushed LeTourneau up four, 29-25. A 4-2 point advantage for the Eagles chipped the Jacket lead to two, 31-29, heading into halftime.
LETU shot 53% in the second quarter, while Emory shot 44% from the floor.
LeTourneau stung the Eagles to open the second half, after an old fashion three-point play from Thomas ignited a 17-4 run to propel the Jackets up 15. Whitfield highlighted the run with six points, while Thomas setup four YellowJackets for scores. LETU continued to pour it on the Eagles in the fourth, extending its lead to a game-high 18 when
Malacia Guy threaded the needle to Whitfield for two. The YellowJackets did not look back, leading the rest of the contest en route to an 11-point road victory.
Inside the Numbers:
Whitfield recorded her first double-double of the season.
Moon had a season-high six points with two assists and a steal.
Thomas' 13 points and five assists are a season high.
Guy pulled down eight rebounds to go along with six points and five assists.
Whitfield also had three steals. She has recorded three steals in every game this season.
LeTourneau shot 43% from the field, holding Emory to 34% shooting.
LETU had 16 fast break points. EU had 11.
The Jackets outrebounded the Eagles 46-32.
