Men's basketball rides big second half to victory

Adams has best game in YellowJacket uniform

LONGVIEW, Texas Christian Adams netted seven of his career-high 16 points in the second half as LETU pulled away from Belhaven, earning a 78-66 victory at Solheim Arena Thursday.

Locked in a nip and tuck affair that featured six lead changes and five ties in the first half, LETU found itself in unfamiliar territory. The YellowJackets (7-0, 3-0 ASC) and the Blazers (3-4, 1-3 ASC) went to the locker rooms deadlocked at 35, the first time this season LETU failed to hold a halftime lead.

Luke Couch, who led all players with 29 points, hit a three-pointer a minute and 41 seconds into the final period, giving the Blazers their largest lead of the contests at 40-37. He put his side in front two more times over the next three minutes, including a jumper with 15:30 left, vaulting Belhaven into the lead for the final time at 44-43.

A pair of free throws by Adams, jumpstarted a 23-7 spurt over a 6:54 span, concluded on a jumper by Jordan Pride. His bucked nudged the margin out to 15, the largest spread in the tilt, at 66:51, with eight minutes left in regulation.

Warren Richardson, who led the YellowJackets with 20 points, netted nine during the run. Pride dropped in five of his eight during the span.

Belhaven pestered LETU all night and didn't go away easy, slicing the deficit in half and forcing the home side to call a timeout with just under three minutes remaining. After the pause in action, Adams squashed the threat with a three-pointer, ending a 13-5 spurt by the Blazers.

Couch drained a two-pointer to answer a pair of free throws by Matthews, before Adams closed out the scoring when he put away an alley-oop from Richardson.
