YellowJackets eek by Howard Payne 81-80

Jackson sinks game winner with 4.5 left, Wilson sets career-high

LONGVIEW, Texas – The LETU men's basketball remains unbeaten after Deonte Jackson's layup with 4.5 seconds remaining Saturday at Solheim Arena.

On a night when the YellowJackets were saddled with foul trouble and two of the top scorers on the team, Kyce Wilson and the rest of the bench filled the void.

The YellowJackets improved to 6-0 on the season, including 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the 81-80 triumph over Howard Payne. The Yellow Jackets drop to 2-6, 1-3 this campaign.

LETU led for all but 29 seconds in the contest, building its largest advantage at 19 (43-24) in the final minute of the first half.

Jarren Godfrey sank both free throws with 11.7 seconds left in regulation, completing the comeback and pushing Howard Payne in front.

Rookie head coach James Wallace called a timeout to set up a final play. Jackson received the inbounds pass and drove coast-to-coast. As he crossed the timeline, the visitors defense parted like the Red Sea, allowing Jackson a clear lane to the hoop, kissing the ball off the glass and through the net. The backside help arrived late, awarding Jackson a three-point opportunity. His free throw caromed off the rim and into the arms of a visiting player.

Howard Payne designed a final attempt after calling a timeout but Andrew Eberhardt foiled the attack, swiping the second part of a give-and-go with one tick of the clock remaining.

This is the best start through the first six contests to open a season. They began 5-1 three times during the NCAA era with those all coming in the last four years.

He drained 4-of-7 from the field, recording a career-high 12 points. Jordan Pride chipped in with his highest output through six games with nine, while Elijah Gerber played 18 minutes, needing one basket and one board for a double-double.

Eberhardt totaled 13 points, while Warren Richardson netted 10.
