LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University men's soccer team is off to its best start in over a decade, following a 3-0 shutout of Jarvis Christian Tuesday night.
Oliver Placencia scored twice, and
Ulyses Pelcastre added another goal as the YellowJackets improved to 3-1, entering Saturday's American Southwest Conference opener at East Texas Baptist.
LETU goalkeeper
Kolton Johnson stopped six shots, including a late penalty kick, to record the shutout for his first victory as a YellowJacket.
Placencia netted his first goal on an assist from
Santi De La Torre in the 27
th minute. That gave the YellowJackets a 1-0 lead at halftime. LeTourneau was outshot, 6-4, in the first half.
Placencia scored again in the 66
th minute on a setup from
Russell Gray. Pelcastre scored off a free kick in the 78
th minute to put the Bulldogs (0-1) on their heels.
Johnson maintained a clean sheet when he stopped Obed Sepulveda's penalty kick in the 89
th minute.
LeTourneau was outshot, 18-7, in a game that featured five yellow cards. The Jackets were whistled offsides seven times. JCC had no offsides.
The game was made up from the Feb. 10 contest wiped out by lightning, with the Jackets leading 3-2 in the 60
th minute. No result, nor any stats were recorded for the first meeting between the two teams.
LeTourneau's victory marked the first time since 2010 the Jackets have recorded three wins in their first four games. LETU won its first three games that season, all by 2-1 verdicts, before suffering a loss in the fourth game.
The 3-1 start is also the best in head coach
Collin Cone's three-year LeTourneau career.
LETU will kick off at ETBU 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
