MARSHALL, Texas – Talk about a back breaker.
LeTourneau University men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double overtime loss to rival East Texas Baptist Saturday at Marshall High School.
It marked the first countable game in 25 days the Jackets had been scored on, and the final goal was devastating. ETBU's Dominic Wood found the back of the net in the 108
th minute in a game where LeTourneau's defense, albeit banged up, was stifling to say the least. Wood's goal brought to an end an otherwise glowing effort from the growing YellowJackets in the American Southwest Conference opener.
Andrew Mejia put LeTourneau (3-2-0, 0-1-0 ASC) on the board in the seventh minute when he raced up the left half of the field and beat Tigers goalkeeper Gunner Barry on the far side. It was Mejia's first career goal.
Oliver Placencia drew the assist.
YellowJackets keeper
CJ Leyva stopped four shots in the first half, thwarting the Tigers constant attack. ETBU (2-1-1, 2-0-0) attempted nine of their 15 shots in the first half. Leyva made another save in the 82
nd minute when turned aside Dieb Matthew's bid for the top right part of the goal.
The Tigers got the equalizer in the 86 minute when Travis Floyd scored on an assist from Juan Cairo. Cairo also assisted on Wood's goal.
It remained 1-1 after regulation.
LeTourneau's
Beau Weber, who came up big earlier in the game on a team save to prevent a Tigers' goal, took a shot in the 99
th minute, but it went out to the right. It was the only shot attempted during the first overtime.
In the 104
th minute, East Texas Baptist was whistled, with the Jackets attacking in the box. LETU's
Santi De La Torre was awarded a penalty kick. But Barry made a diving stop to his left to keep the match tied at 1-1.
Russell Gray had another scoring chance in the 106
th minute, but his shot went over the top of the cross bar.
ETBU outshot LETU, 15-8. The Tigers were whistled for 16 fouls to the Jackets' 10. East Texas Baptist was issued four yellow cards, while LeTourneau was given one.
The YellowJackets will host Louisiana College 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day.
