YellowJackets Drop Pair of Matches to No. 6 UT Dallas

LONGVIEW –  LeTourneau University's volleyball team fell in two matches to American Southwest Conference East Division-leading University of Texas at Dallas Friday, 25-20, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-21, 25-16, 25-21, 25-14. 

LeTourneau is the first team to win a set over the No. 6 ranked Comets this season.

In the first match, the YellowJackets (10-4, 7-4 American Southwest Conference) finished with 30 kills and 18 attack errors. The Comets (11-0, 11-0 ASC) totalled 42 kills and 20 attack errors. LETU hit .095, while UT Dallas had a .154 attack rate. 

It was a back and forth contest between the YellowJackets and the Comets in the first set, but a four point run by the Comets put LETU down, 19-12. A kill by Kianna Crow from Natalie Davenport halted the Comet run. The YellowJackets pulled within three, 22-19, after a kill by Madison Denega from Samantha Winkel. That would be as close as LETU would get, ultimately falling in the first set. In the second set, the Comets jumped out to a 7-2 lead. After a service error from UT Dallas' Emma Sevening, LETU went on a five point run to tie the game at eight. In that run, Camryn Hill and Denega tallied a killed, both coming from a Winkel assist. UT Dallas put together a 9-4 spurt to give them a 19-14, lead. After a kill by Skylar Fowler from Davenport, the YellowJackets pulled within three, but was not enough to edge a comeback. The third set featured eight lead changes and seven ties. Despite the Jackets holding the Comets to a .06 attack percentage, UT Dallas snagged the set to close out the match. 

Crow finished with nine kills and 13 digs, while Denega finished with eight kills, eight digs and two blocks. Natalie Connelly tallied four kills, two blocks and two serving aces. Winkel had 17 assists and six digs, while Davenport had 10 assists and nine digs. Hill gathered four kills and two blocks. Allison Smith had three kills and three blocks. Fowler finished with two kills and a block, while Courtney Edge had 12 digs. 

In the second match, the Comets held LETU to a .095 attack percentage. UT Dallas slammed down 58 kills, compared to the YellowJackets 34.

LeTourneau took a 7-5 lead to start the first set, behind the serving of Winkel. After a kill by UT Dallas' Erin Rogers, the Comets jumped back in front, 16-13. The YellowJackets fought their way to tie the game at 21, after a huge block from Connelly and Fowler. The Comets would go on a four point run, behind two kills from Gabi Sommerfield, to take the first set. In the second set, UT Dallas totaled 13 kills, holding the YellowJackets to only five kills. The Comets created a .119 attack percentage, compared to the Jackets -.026, to down LETU. In the third set, the YellowJackets battled, opening with a 7-2 run, behind the serving of Davenport. A kill from UT Dallas' Abby Jones pulled the Comet's within three. LETU put together a 5-0 surge, behind the serving of Crow, who gathered two serving aces during this run. The Jackets developed a 17-9 lead over the Comets. A late run by UT Dallas, put the Comets down two, 20-18, but a kill by Crow from Winkel ended the hopes of a comeback for the Comets. This is the first set loss for UT Dallas this season. In the fourth set, the Comets put together a .324 attack percentage, holding LETU to only nine kills and a .176 attack rate. UT Dallas slammed down 16 kills to put away the YellowJackets, and win the second match.

Crow finished with eleven kills, 16 digs and a career high three serving aces. Kylie Cobb totaled a career high eight kills and 23 digs. Hill had a career high four kills and three blocks. Winkel finished with 16 assists and six digs, while Davenport finished with 15 assists, eight digs and a serving ace. Edge finished with 14 digs. Fowler had four kills and two blocks, while Smith had four kills and a block. Connelly had two kills and four blocks. 

The YellowJackets will play at Belhaven in a pair of matches Thursday.
