YellowJackets Burn Blazers in Regular Season Finale

Jackson ties ASC free throws record

JACKSON, Miss. – Deonte was right at home in Jackson.

LeTourneau University's Deonte Jackson stole the show in the final regular season game as the YellowJackets freshman guard tied an American Southwest Conference record in Friday's 103-78 win at Belhaven. Jackson went 16-for-16 from the free throw line. He tied the ASC record for free throw percentage in a game, matching that of Rocky Feliciano of Sul Ross State, who went 16-for-16 versus Dallas Christian on Dec. 10, 2015, and Josiah Johnson, who equaled those numbers on Jan. 14 this year.

Jackson finished with a season-high 36 points as LETU (7-3, 5-3 ASC) likely assured itself a spot in the league postseason tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday. The top four teams in each of the conference's two divisions, based on winning percentage, advance to the ASC Championship Tournament. The final regular season games will be played Saturday.

LETU is seeking its sixth straight ASC Tournament appearance.

Prior to the game, the Jackets coaching staff wrote on the locker room board:

"This is Round 1 of the ASC Tournament."

"To win the ASC Tournament, it's going to take four games this year. The guys embraced it, and they played with ASC Championship Tournament effort tonight," LeTourneau seven-year coach Dan Miller said. "We told our guys, 'We have to win to advance our season,' and they played with that purpose."

Jackson's 36 points are the most by a YellowJacket this year.

John Argue had 18 points, nine rebounds and a block. Andrew Eberhardt had 17 points on 8 of 13 shooting, and had nine boards and, four assists and three steals. Jackson and Kyle Matthews both had three steals as well, while Matthews grabbed nine boards, and scored seven points. Isaac Stolzenburg had nine points and four assists.

LeTourneau went 28 of 33 from the free throw line.

The Jackets outscored the Blazers, 41-18, in points off turnovers, and 26-13, in transition. Belhaven (4-13, 2-12) turned it over 23 times. LETU committed 16 turnovers.

The YellowJackets never trailed in a game they shot 48.5 percent, and outrebounded the Blazers, 41-27.

LETU led by as many as 17 late in the first half when Argue knocked down a three-pointer. Eberhardt scored in the paint at the 14:19 mark in the second half to extend the lead to 22. Walker Blaine and Kyce Wilson drained back-to-back 3s as the lead mushroomed to 28. Belhaven cut it to 13, but the Jackets went on an 11-0 run to build the lead back to 26 within the last minute-and-a-half.

"We felt we were very rusty at everything last night," Miller said of the drubbing at Louisiana College Thursday, following a 26-day layoff. "We said, 'We can't make excuses. We've got to get back to YellowJacket basketball.'"

That they did, and Jackson took center stage. He went 8 of 14 from the floor, hitting 4 of 7 triples. Jackson's 16 made free throws also broke Justin Moore's school record of 15 at East Texas Baptist on Feb. 12, 2018.

"Deonte just put on a special performance today," Miller said.

The YellowJackets scored a season-high 103 points. It was second time they've scored 100 this season. LETU had 100 points in the season-opening win over Howard Payne on Dec. 11. The 28 made free throws is also a season high.

"After our worst game of the year last night, they responded tonight," Miller said. "I was just proud of their response."

LETU will learn its postseason fate Saturday.
