LONGVIEW, Texas – LeTourneau University's men's soccer team secured a 3-1 win over Millsaps College Saturday afternoon at the Joyce Family Athletic Complex.
"I'm really glad our guys got the win today," head coach
Collin Cone said about his team's performance. "I thought the boys played hard and deserved the win."
The YellowJackets (3-1) finished 2-1 in its three game homestand this past week.
After a scoreless first half, the YellowJackets found their rhythm in the second when
Niko Stavros blasted a shot from
Emad Mohamed to the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Jackets a 1-0 lead at the 53
rd minute mark. LETU struck again, after
Santi De La Torre sent a soaring corner kick to find Mohamed, who headed a shot in past the Majors goalkeeper, giving the Jackets a 2-0 advantage. At the 86
th mark,
Syed Zain notched his first goal of the season when he dashed through the Millsaps' defense to slam a shot to the back of the net, extending the LETU lead to three.
"The first half we looked a bit lethargic, sluggish, and not very interested in playing," Cone commented regarding the Jackets' slow start. "In the second half the boys came out with a new mindset and made adjustments that really paid off."
The Majors got on the board at the 86
th minute mark when Jacks Dowdy snuck one in through the legs of LETU goalkeeper
CJ Leyva, but it wasn't enough to secure a comeback.
"Whenever you score three or more goals in a game its exciting and good for the program."
"We have to continue to move forward. We have a huge test this coming week as we play two very good programs in Sewanee and Birmingham-Southern. Both teams are well coached and have quality players, this will be a great test for us."
Inside the Box:
LETU outshot the YellowJackets 13-8, including eight on goal.
Mohamed and Stavros also captured their first goals of the season.
Leyva had two saves from three shots on goal.
