JACKSON, Miss. – LeTourneau University's volleyball team falls to host Millsaps College, 25-20, 20-25, 15-25, 16-25, and No. 19 nationally ranked Birmingham-Southern College, 16-25, 20-25, 20-25, Saturday at the Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational.
The YellowJackets (2-1) carried its momentum from a 2-0 day in the first day of the Invitational into the first set of game one on day two. LeTourneau had a .278 attack percentage in the set, while holding Millsaps to .226.
Kylie Cobb got the ball rolling for LETU, slamming down a kill to spark an early run. Back-to-back putaways during the run by Kaci Monk from Natalie Davenport put the Jackets up, 6-1, forcing an early Majors timeout. Kills from Hannah Payan and Avery Mabery pushed the YellowJacket lead to five. Maddy Denega's ace propelled LeTourneau within a point of winning the set, and a kill by Cobb put the Jackets up, 1-0.
Millsaps bounced back in the second set, knotting the match at 1-1. The Majors held the YellowJackets to a 0.058 attack rate, but only put together a 0.089 hitting percentage of its own.
LeTourneau fell behind, 16-8, before closing the gap to six on a service error by Millsaps and a kill from Allison Smith. The Majors extended its lead to 11 before Bethany Gilbreath and Smith hammered home a ball to seven, 22-15. That's as close as the Jackets would get to the lead, falling in the third set, 25-15.
LETU led early in the deciding set, 5-1, after a kill from Cobb. The Majors compiled a run, led by the serving of Anna Capezzera, taking a 16-12 advantage over the Jackets. LeTourneau would not recover, falling to Millsaps in the match.
Davenport finished with 31 assists, 10 digs and an ace. Monk had 11 kills and a block, while Payan had seven kills and two digs. Smith tallied six kills, two digs and a dig. Courtney Edge had 15 digs, while Denega and Reina Lawson totaled seven digs a piece.
In the final game of the weekend, the YellowJackets hit 0.057, while No. 19 Birmingham-Southern arranged a 0.190 attack rate. The Panthers also put down 43 kills and had 42 assists, compared to LETU's 20 kills and 19 assists.
LeTourneau took the early lead, 5-2, after a service ace by Monk and a kill blasted down by Cobb. Back-to-back kills from Birmingham-Southern's Kennedy Dickens and Emily Buhl sparked a 7-0 run for the Panthers, forcing a YellowJacket timeout.
BSC held a 13-9 advantage over LETU after the run, before a kill from Cobb and an attack error committed by the Panthers halted the run. Birmingham-Southern pushed the lead up to eight, ultimately putting the Jackets away to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Panthers put together a 0.220 hitting percentage, while holding the YellowJackets to a 0.182 attack rate in the second set. The Jackets fell behind early in the set, trailing 10-3, before a timeout from LETU Head Coach Mallory Matthews. Birmingham-Southern slammed down 15 kills to put the YellowJackets away, taking a 2-0 match lead.
In the third and final set, LeTourneau fought hard in a set that featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Behind the serving of Cobb and a kill by Gilbreath, the YellowJackets broke a 6-6 tie and took a 10-7 advantage over the Panthers.
After a kill by BSC's Chloe Cowgur, the set was knotted up once again, 13-13. An attack error by the Jackets and back-to-back serving aces by Birmingham-Southern, gave the Panthers a 18-14 lead. BSC would lead the rest of the set, ending the YellowJackets hope for a comeback.
The Jackets finished 2-2 on the weekend.
LeTourneau will host The University of Dallas at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the home opener.
