LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team came out on top of Sul Ross 2-1 on Thursday night.
LeTourneau (6-6-4, 2-4-2 ASC) took full advantage of a couple of defensive mistakes by the Sul Ross (0-11-3, 0-7-1 ASC).
The YellowJackets put the pressure on early in the match finding unique opportunities to challenge the Lobos. The match remained scoreless until the 39th minute when
Russell Gray was able to cross the ball into a dangerous spot.
Garrett Thom was then able to put pressure on the Lobos leading to an own goal to put the YellowJackets ahead 1-0 with six minutes to go in the first half.
YellowJackets held a 1-0 lead at the half despite being outshot 8-4, the LeTourneau backline played strong and held the Lobos scoreless through 45 minutes.
LeTourneau put another one in the back of the net early in the second half when a misplaced clearance attempt landed the ball in front of
Russell Gray around the penalty mark where he finished off the unassisted goal to take a 2-0 lead.
The YellowJackets maintained the 2-0 lead until the 89th minute when Sul Ross had a breakaway opportunity and Mauricio Perez put the Lobos on the board with a shot off a pass from Julio Hinojos.
The YellowJackets held off the Lobos and their comeback attempt ending the game with a 2-1 win for the hosts. The win for the Jackets keeps the door open for the postseason tournament.
Raul Torrez, the LeTourneau keeper, played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves for the Jackets while Julian Sandoval across the field in the net for the Lobos also played 90 minutes and recorded two saves.
