Men's Soccer Heads to ASC Title Match

AUSTIN, Texas -- For the first time since 1998, the LeTourneau men's soccer team will play for an ASC Tournament championship.

Raul Torrez made a clinching save in the penalty shootout, after Russell Gray tied the match in the 86th minute, to send No. 6 seed LeTourneau past No. 2 seed Concordia, 5-4 in kicks, following a 1-1 draw.

LeTourneau (7-6-6) will face top-seed Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Austin for the ASC Championship on the campus of St. Edward's University. UMHB defeated UT Dallas, 5-1, in Thursday's first semifinal.

Down 1-0 late in the second half, LeTourneau turned up the pressure and churned out opportunity after opportunity. Finally, the YellowJackets broke through in the 86th minute as Gray got loose and knocked in his shot past Concordia keeper Joshua Redding to even the score at 1-1.

The goal was Gray's eighth of the year, and fifth over the last five matches.

LeTourneau took 11 shots in the second half alone as the YellowJackets worked to erase a one-goal deficit. Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the first half on Theo Givens' goal in the 10th minute.

The LeTourneau defense stood up through the two overtime sessions to force a penalty shootout for a second straight match.

Both teams were successful in the first two rounds as Gray and Emad Mohamed converted on their chances. Concordia grabbed a 3-2 lead after three rounds when Redding saved Diego Enriquez's attempt. However, the lead didn't last long as the Tornados' Gustavo Hernandez missed high in the fourth round after Jared Woodruff converted.

After each team made one in the fifth, Chino Rojas stepped up in the sixth round and knocked it in. Torrez then came up with the clinching save as he stopped the attempt from Yael Sanchez to send the YellowJackets into the final.

After making 11 saves on Tuesday night, Torrez was again in double-digits as he collected 10 in the draw. Redding made six for Concordia (10-3-4)

LeTourneau had 17 shots in the match, led by six from Rojas. Gray added three attempts and Keaton Johnson had two strong looks late in the second half.
